My local bike shop guy heard about my quixotic quest to adapt a 40 spoke Sturmey Archer hub to a 36 spoke rim with machined adapter plates, and give me another hub to play with.

It looked nice on the outside, but it did not make the expected ratcheting sound that a freewheeling hub should make when spun. It also did not work correctly.

I thought maybe it would just be full of gummed up grease inside so I poured a bunch of paint thinner in there and let it sit, but that did not fix it, so I disassembled it and found it to be extremely crusty, rusty, and gunky inside.

I'm going to try to make it work again, even though this hub still won't work on my bike because it's drilled for 28 spokes lol. It just seems fun to see if I can clean it up and fix it.

Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots. This is a great reason to ditch windows altogether. Switch to 🧑‍💻 They don’t care about your privacy or safety anymore and not hiding it either. I just had a conversation with a guy who said, “Yeah, well I’m a capitalist.”

So I asked, “Okay, how much capital do you have?”

Boy, oh boy, does that question put things in perspective. He became a caricature of an old Warner Brothers cartoon character, trying to compose himself as he fumbled for words, all while he avoided actually answering the question.

So I simply repeated the question. I highly recommend.

andrewfelix,
@andrewfelix@mastodon.social avatar

@martin_piper @MattMerk Capital implies having assets that contribute to income/profit. It's a great question, because it's not just about money, it's a question of control. How much of the means of production do you have? Do you have an investment property? Do you have stocks? Do you own a factory? My guess is a lot of people who call themselves capitalists are probably at the mercy of people with a lot more capital.

@verge more forced redundancy. The Apple Pencil is incompatible with iPads from last week and will be tethered to your account. Gross.

@arstechnica PSA, you can run your own private streaming server. It's a tad complicated, but you can pay people on fiverr to do it for next to nothing for you. AMA.

Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

andrewfelix,
@andrewfelix@mastodon.social avatar

@mighty_orbot @ben @mighty_orbot @ben The argument isn't about profit, which is pretty clearly outlined. OpenAI's explicit and ultimate intent is to replace people and in the meantime it's spitting out garbage information.
