#DS9 S4E24 The Quickening

Bashir: how did you get her to take us to the hospital? these aren't exactly the friendliest people

Dax: I gave her my hair clip

cut to a woman fussing with her hair and possibly looking into a mirror

I didn't notice it the first time I watched DS9, but it's more "women be vain" 🙃

S4E25 Body Parts

Bashir, explaining why Nerys is now carrying Keiko's fetus: "I had to find another womb for the baby and the only two people available were Major Kira ... and me."

idky this didn't pop out for me the first time I watched DS9, but ... if he's an available person, then he's got a womb. so Bashir is but he couldn't operate on himself, so that's why Nerys got the fetus 🤷🏻

okay, I know that the Kazon stripped them of all their technology, but surely they didn't stop to dig out the subdermal universal translators from some 150 odd crew members???

so how come they can't understand these particular aliens???

THEIR EXPERIENCE OF REJECTION IS THE ARTWORK

For the last 4 years, the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New Art has been running an installation called The Ladies Lounge. Only people who identify as ladies are allowed to enter. In the lounge, they can sit in luxury and look at famous artworks by Picasso etc, which are not available elsewhere in the museum. They are served champagne and pampered by male butlers. It was meant as a comment on exclusionary men's clubs (which still exist in Australia and elsewhere).

Some dude got upset about it and sued the gallery for entry at the anti-discrimination tribunal. The artist, Kirsha Kaechele, said she was "absolutely delighted" that the exhibit had been taken to court. “The men are experiencing Ladies Lounge, their experience of rejection is the artwork,” she said.

She then turned the tribunal hearing into part of the art as well, by having a group of women observing the hearing dress like her and mimic her every move. They did not disrupt the hearing, and at the end of proceedings they exited the tribunal to the song Simply Irresistible.

Kaechele argued in her defence the Ladies Lounge was a “a response to the lived experience of women forbidden from entering certain spaces throughout history” and promoted equal opportunity.

The tribunal found against the gallery and is ordering them to allow men to enter the exhibit. MONA is removing the exhibit instead.

Fucking love this artist 😂

agenderfox,
@agenderfox@babka.social avatar

@fullfathomfive I'd love to know how many people who don't normally identify as women claimed to do so in order to view this exhibit. bc transphobes are screaming that this happens constantly, and this seems like the lowest-stakes "ID as a woman to access women's spaces" scenario out there

like, it's ridiculous to think that a serious man athlete would take hormones to permanently alter his body and then spend months/years being referred to as the wrong name and pronouns simply to compete in women's sports but that a random Australian man wouldn't walk up to an exhibit and say "I identify as a lady" to look at some art and then never see any of the ladies/butlers who had been there again

currently reading "You Just Need to Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon (co-host of #MaintenancePhase), which states:

"In 2004, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published 'Actual Causes of Death in the United States, 2000,' the study that first trumpeted that some four hundred thousand Americans died each year simply from being fat."

I already have some idea of how this story will go, from listening to Maintenance Phase's episode on The French Paradox*, and my little goblin brain wants to publish a study of Actual Causes of Death that proves that some millions of Americans die each year "under mysterious circumstances"

  • the TL;DR version is: "cause of death is very hard to actually determine and is influenced to a great degree by policies and how forms are designed"

my very first* #StarTrek was not #DS9, as I've said here before, but #WrathOfKhan

back a million years ago, a local theater was playing Wrath of Khan, and some friends talked me into going with them. since I'd never watched Star Trek before, I have retained exactly zero of this movie

I still feel a little silly for not having realized earlier than, like, season 4 of #TNG that Noonien Soongh is a different person than Khan Noonien-Singh. another issue with having started out of order ... when I started my TNG watch, all I knew about Khan (besides that there was a movie about him) was what was in #StrangeNewWorlds. I also didn't have a very good grasp on the timeline of the different series (including the 100-year gap)

#AllTrekWatch #TOS #TheOriginalSeries #TheNextGeneration

*not counting the last 5-10 minutes of whatever rerun was playing before #Sliders every week

morning, Mastodonians 💜 I'm tired as shit 🙃 but I've got RITALIN again for the first time in months, and I really need to get some shit done, so it's time for a #LifeStuff post!

for those who aren't familiar, it's a list of things I want to get done today, and then I post at least once more, updating my progress

so:
✓ make bed

  • breakfast
  • continue laundry (fold and put away dry stuff, start the next batch)
  • restock cat food cans (from the pantry/chewy.com packages to the kitchen)
  • open all recent packages, break down boxes
  • finally finish putting my Hanukkah decorations away so I can stow the box somewhere (ditto my new seder plate)
  • gather recyclables, start taking them out, also grab my mail/packages from the mailbox

okay, I'm going to end here and make some breakfast. there's more stuff, but I'll figure it out after I've done some of this. thanks for being a kind of virtual body double, friends 💜

  • open all recent packages, break down boxes
✓ finally finish putting my Hanukkah decorations away so I can stow the box somewhere (ditto my new seder plate)
  • gather recyclables, start taking them out, also grab my mail/packages from the mailbox

I don't understand why brick and mortal clothing stores are dying. Am I the only person who wants to try things on before I buy them? Sizing for women's clothing is crafted entirely from lies. I just bought a size 8 top from a brand, which fit perfectly, and had to return a pair of size 2 pants from them because they were too big.

@airadam a horrifying read

“We believe any deceleration of AI will cost lives. Deaths that were preventable by the AI that was prevented from existing is a form of murder.”

I felt sick to my stomach reading this article, but I am glad I read it

opening the article, I thought, "I bet it doesn't even talk about using AI for Union busting":

labornotes.org/blogs/2023/05/union-busting-chatbot-eating-disorders-nonprofit-puts-ai-retaliation

and then reading the article, I kept being reminded of weight loss public health stuff: specific, actual harms being outweighed by vague, potential benefits (for examples, I offer Maintenance Phase, a podcast about junk science relating to wellness, weight loss and health ... specifically check out the episodes about The President's Physical Fitness Test, Calorie Menu Labeling (two parter) and the Worm Wars)

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
  • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
  • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
  • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

agenderfox,
@agenderfox@babka.social avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic not really, but I ate ham sandwiches nearly every school lunch of my K-12 existence, and my friends told me I would get tired of them but I never did

my sister recently told me that the smell of oranges and popcorn always reminds her of me, bc when I got home from school, I would always snack on one or the other (still do!)

I'm guessing I might have been called picky if my parents had insisted on me eating different/more varied foods, but 🤷🏻

I'm not good at writing reviews, but this book made me feel so seen. Dex is me; I too have a wandering heart; I too feel a constant war between needing to throw away everything I've built to seek a new purpose and dreading starting over, again

I love the religion in the book; I love the God of Small Comforts. I love the tea ceremony. I LOVE Mosscap so much. and I fucking love that the entire book is basically two people: one who uses they pronouns, and the other who uses it pronouns.

anyway, you should probably read it. I'm going to start A Prayer for the Crown-Shy now
