I don't understand why brick and mortal clothing stores are dying. Am I the only person who wants to try things on before I buy them? Sizing for women's clothing is crafted entirely from lies. I just bought a size 8 top from a brand, which fit perfectly, and had to return a pair of size 2 pants from them because they were too big.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@evacide nope, I'm the same way. Even knowing my measurements, I'm only willing to buy t-shirts and athletic shorts online. Everything else (especially bras, holy crap!) needs to be tried on in a store.

What looks good on a model in a picture isn't necessarily gonna look good on me, and a lot of online clothing is composed of 10% spandex and 90% wet tissue paper.

Robotron,

@tess @evacide my wife asserts that me just putting my measurements in a webpage and getting a shirt and pants that fit is the height of male privilege!

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@Robotron @evacide waist + inseam?

If you don't have an ass and you're not fat, yes. Straight-sized men are effectively tubes and men's clothing is appropriately tube-shaped.

I will say that the modern cheap, clingy fabrics can be really unflattering on a lot of guys as well, especially if you're not built like one of Tolkien's elves or a Marvel superhero. I just think men tend to be less picky about what they wear (much to their detriment).

Robotron,

@tess @evacide waist inseam, chest/neck sizes for shirts because they can get flappy

@tess @evacide

I like made to measure as a reasonable alternative.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@Vrimj @tess When I was a shape that was particularly hard to fit, I ordered from eShakti, but the quality of their fabrics was really low.

_radiobabe,

@evacide well, i cannot buy any clothing or even shoes without trying. Bras are the most difficult... so no online shopping for me.

thomas_decker,

@evacide On the other hand, before these ready-to-wear fast fashion stores, jobs for tailors and seamstresses still existed. Or people would tailor their own clothes.

The sewing machine is mechanically perfect. It took enormous effort to discourage people from using it, replace it with flimsy textile that has a lifespan of a butterfly.

Consequence: A fast fashion garbage pile the size of mount everest, all the while "donations" to third world countries drive tailors out of work there.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomas_decker I do not buy fast fashion. One of the reasons I want to try things on before I buy them is that I am spending more on one piece of clothing than most TikTokers spend on their entire haul. I want clothes that fit and I want the quality of the materials and workmanship to be high, so that I will not have to buy a replacement for many years to come.

aunteef,
@aunteef@mstdn.party avatar

@evacide pretty off topic but I feel the same about the wave of online car buying right now. How the hell can a person tell from an online description if the car works for them or not? I'm just flummoxed.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@aunteef Everything about buying a car now is terrible.

astroPug,

@evacide

Agreed. I have been pretty surprised, and in a negative way, at how the sizing, fabric, and just plain shape of clothing did not match expectations at all.

So I don’t order new things online, but I have rebought duplicates of basics I already have.

dsully,
@dsully@mastodon.social avatar

@evacide They certainly aren’t “dying” in Italy. Clothing stores everywhere.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@dsully I enjoy shopping in Italy very much. Italians care about fashion a whole lot and I'm here for it.

Mia0,

@evacide the last time i went to brick & morter was for a specific brand of jean they had advertized the day before as having. They did not have it. Every item had limited sizes, and when i asked about buying my size they told me to order it online. I was so mad that i've never gone back.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@Mia0 I had this problem when I was remodeling and trying to buy things for my house. Heaven forbid that you might want to sit on a couch before buying it or touch a door handle before you get 16 of them for your house.

bobayaga,
@bobayaga@blahaj.social avatar

@evacide I assume any brick and mortar stores dying now after decades of e-commerce are actually being done in by landlords wanting obscene rents or private equity firms stripping them for parts rather than customer preferences

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@bobayaga I suspect this is the case. I have no idea what kinds of perverse incentives are in place that lead to landlords preferring to have retail spaces left empty rather than reducing rent to a store that is already there.

aronow,
@aronow@hachyderm.io avatar

@evacide totally agree, but I do like the privacy of doing my trying on at home too

unicorndeburgh,
@unicorndeburgh@hachyderm.io avatar

@evacide It's not just "size". Several articles of clothing may fit, but minor differences about how they fit make a bit difference in both appearance and comfort

Then there's fabric. I've had cotton t-shirts that feel plush and lovely, and ones that were thin and positively scratchy.

I buy FAR MORE clothes in visit to a store, than I do searching online.

danmcd,

@evacide

Your typo "brick and mortal" amuses me, and makes me think of martial-arts video games... in a clothing store!

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@danmcd It's so good that I'm just leaving it there.

agenderfox,
@agenderfox@babka.social avatar

@evacide @danmcd me and my friends are now fantasizing about a store run by Fae or, like, Owl House-type witches and it's just full of human junk

@comicsbyxan @ninsiana0

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@agenderfox @danmcd @comicsbyxan @ninsiana0 I would like to spend all of my time shopping with fae and Owl House-style witches.

bedirthan,
@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

@evacide and shoe stores!

Even the same brand will have pairs in the same size that don't fit the same. I need to try them on
