I gotta say, the Mastodon security disclosure for tomorrow's vuln puts most vendors to shame - and Mastodon are a non-profit doing open source code.

They just emailed me to let me know (I've never contacted them before, they've used the contact address on my Mastodon server) the details, including how it was found, how serious and when time wise the patch will be released during the day tomorrow.

I pay Microsoft 9 figures in licensing at job and they sometimes don't even issue a CVE.

#PSA: Another hint about finding a #Mastodon server: I recommend to check if the server follows the Mastodon Server Convenant <https://joinmastodon.org/covenant> which is a promise to follow some basic responsibilities when it comes to the server health itself: Daily backups, one person has emergency access to server, 3 months notice before a shutdown. So even if things fail, the worst disasters should be averted by this.
I think the #Convenant is a good thing.

The biggest advantage of (and the in general) over is an ethical one: It is (https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html).

Unlike Twitter, there isn't an owner class that can just dictate all the rules for everyone else.

By joining and be active on it, you help the network because the more users we have, the more of a reason it gives to others to move as well.

A guide to some Fediverse terms:

Toot = Post (named after the Mastodon mascot, in theory)

Favourite = Like (there's a separate Bookmark function if you really want to keep track of posts)

Boost = Re-Tweet, shares a post with your followers

Instance = Server = The site you signed up on, each server is independent

Birdsite = Hellsite = Twitter

Fediverse = This place you're on right now, reading this. Mastodon is one kind of server on here, but there are many other types.

What if the Microsoft Cloud goes down? For instance, if a surgeon needs to access crucial information about their patients during an operation and can't due to technical issues in Windows PC in cloud. The cloud is bad for emergency use cases. Is MS going to guaranty 100% uptime?

@nixCraft So basically they want to turn the clock back to the IT dark ages, before the invention of the personal computer. MS really hates the users.

This is the logical end point of #proprietary software ideology: The desire to assume total control over everyone's computing no matter what.

I'm glad I escaped MS's clutches many years ago.

It is suggested that companies like Microsoft should be broken up into multiple parts to eliminate their monopoly and stop their invasive privacy policies. Without this action, they may continue to abuse their power. There should be a movement against ultra-tech-rich companies who hoard more resources than anyone else, similar to billionaire individuals. @nixCraft Breaking up MS may help in the short time but nothing stops the system from producing another #monopoly. Also, in broken up form, a core problem is still not fixed: Basically all the software is still #proprietary, giving the companies #power over everyone else.

Whether you have one big tyrant, or a group of competing tyrants, it is #tyranny nonetheless.

We need to keep pushing for #FreeSoftware and #privacy.

Unless new info emerges, I cannot recommend #Lemmy in good conscience. Federation doesn't fix this IMHO because being a main developer is a high position and it also affects non-dev things like donations.

For this reason, I wish to distance myself from #Lemmy.

#FreeSoftware is great but no excuse to ignore other issues.

Despite all the complaining, I actually like #Mastodon so far. A lot. Finally a social network with a sizable user base AND it's free software.

I clearly prefer it 1000 times over all the #proprietary BS that has been all over the web for a while. And people just use it to talk. Cool stuff.

Maybe Mastodon is actually a much bigger boost for the #FreeSoftware movement than we actually realize by now.

Many people have been talking about deleting their #Reddit account and posts because they hate what the Reddit CEO does.

While I welcome a major #RedditExodus (I never posted on Reddit because it's #proprietary), I urge people to #backup their high-quality posts (those that have helped a large number of people) before they delete their account for good.

And then repost your high-quality stuff somewhere else for archival purposes.

Just a suggestion.

@spreadmastodon I applaud the effort but I think the website is misleading and vague.

First of all, it doesn't explain well what actually is. Newbies won't understand. Like, what do people actually DO on Mastodon? The website doesn't tell.

And it's full of marketing like "maximize your experience" (). People HATE this.

Also, I have no idea what the "Enhance" button does and I don't want to find out.

Finally, "Join" literally suggests the biggest server. 😩

The explainer is OK, more or less but I think it fails to criticize Twitter. IMHO the framing is all wrong: "Lately, a lot of things have gone with Twitter" is not wrong, but it overlooks the 2 key problems of Twitter: Centralization and being proprietary. This gives the company total power.

This is relevant because Mastodon is the antithesis, being decentralized and free software.

I would also add that each instance also has its own rules.

Otherwise, text is fine.

@spreadmastodon Here's a list of suggestions for your site:

  1. Explain what Mastodon is and what the reader can do with it and what the benefit is (assume the reader is a n00b)
  2. Suggest servers other than the biggest one
  3. Remove analytics BS
  4. Rethink the hamburger menu cuz its not obvious it's a clickable link (not every1 is on mobile)
  5. No buzzwords like "maximize your experience"

Don't get me wrong, I still very much applaud the effort but still think it needs work.
