Well, shit. Apparently there's now a bot on Twitter that can tell the location based on a single photo with a precison of 20 miles.

In other words, deleting data is no longer enough. 😯

#Repixture 3.15.1 is here!

Sign text will now finally be shown on the sign. Over 60,000 glyphs are supported. A new pole sign can stand on the ground, hang from the ceiling or a wall.

There's also a spyglass item, and moon phases have been added.

Users completely underestimate how risky the use of #cloud storage is, which is very frustrating. But to be fair, the corporations don't really warn them.

I'm not saying #cloud storage can never be used, but if you have to use it, there are some rules:

▶️ Assume everything will be nuked tomorrow
▶️ Assume the state is watching your activity
▶️ It must not be your primary storage. You must have at least 1 full copy on devices you control
▶️ All files in cloud storage are basically public

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: NEVER, I repeat, NEVER write your next 200,000 words novel in Google Docs. Otherwise you might get rugpulled.

https://www.wired.com/story/what-happens-when-a-romance-author-gets-locked-out-of-google-docs

It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY #cloud service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.

What I dislike about the Wired story is they focus too much about an AI having screwed up. That's not the real problem here.

The problem is the whole concept of cloud storage: The corporation has full control over your data.

Whether this decision was made by AI or a human doesn't matter at the end.

The solution is simple: Just store your data on your own devices. And make backups. And never trust corporations.

Yeah, the Wired story also failed to brutally mock her for failing to . 😈

This is my sign test wall where I've been testing Unicode rendering on the signs in #Repixture, using various #Unicode strings.

🟩 green = OK
🟨 yellow = Unsupported, but renders as U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER (also OK)
🟥 red = FAIL

I think I should maybe call it a day.

Just saw a "indie game dev" video claiming the main reason why most indie games fail is not lack of marketing, but because they suck. I feel personally attacked lol.

I guesss "git gud" applies to game devs, too. 😅

Wuzzy, to gamedev
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

How should render (left) vs how it would render on signs (right) if I would re-enable it.

RTL support works, but that's not good enough. If I understand correctly, the glyphs also need to connect.

But then, even (the font I use) doesn't seem to have the neccessary glyph variants.

Wuzzy, to gamedev
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out rendering #Arabic is hard. No, you can't just implement the #Unicode #Bidirectional Algorithm and call it a day. It turns out the Arabic letters/symbols/? have different forms depending on where they are in the word and probably there are other non-trivial features. Yeah, I guess I just postpone this.

So my 1000 IQ workaround for now is to just render all arabic characters as U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER for now.

I think it's very telling the #US gov't added a way for TikTok/#ByteDance to weasel out of the ban if they decide to sell. Yeah, as if!

But OK. Assuming their "plan" works and #TikTok is sold. Now what?

Would they turn TikTok into a #privacy-respecting #FreeSoftware, fixing all the issues they like to complain about? Or would it just remain the same shitty #proprietary app with the only difference being your data is collected by a different country?

I have a feeling it would be the latter …

Wuzzy, to gay
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

Being #gay is now legal in #dominica, thus abolishing an ancient rule from British colonialism.

https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/breaking-news-dominica-high-court-rules-punishment-of-homosexual-acts-as-unconstitutional/

Good. The state #oppression of gay people and #LGBTQ+ people in general must be condemned and ended worldwide. Only then can true #freedom be achieved. ✊

Of course, the law did not JUST target gay people. "#Homosexual acts" were illegal so #bisexual people were not off the hook. #Homophobia almost always implies #biphobia and other -phobias.

After the attack, I have a suggestion for all forges (, , , , etc.):
Have some way to visualize binary files better, including diffs to such files. Cuz now, we have basically nothing except byte counters.
Since they're binary files, it must be as generic as possible. But even some rendering or analysis is better than nothing.

The idea is to expose weird patterns in binary files that could be a sign of an attack.

Wuzzy,
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

The XZ attack could have been caught BEFORE merging if the binary files would
have been rendered in some way. They had large sections of equal bytes which was very sus. Rendering every byte as a grayscale pixel has exposed very sus uniform gray sections alongside noise sections.

That's just one idea. A skilled attacker could still work around that. Ideally, multiple modes of rendering binary files (and diffs) would exist so it's harder to hide.

Wuzzy,
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

But to be clear: I am under no illusion this will be a magic bullet solution to these types of attacks, nor will it "solve" security. Frankly, I'm not an security expert, I'm just thinking aloud here. 😅

But if there is one thing we should have all learned of the XZ attack is that binary files are sus. They are best avoided but if that's not possible, I believe making them less of a black box could help.

I've fixed a mini #bug in #Minetest: Some blocks sometimes fail to render a face in some instances when they are of the drawtype "4dir", i.e. blocks that can be rotated in 4 directions.

I found this bug because I heavily use this in #Repixture.

I am #cisgender, so #SelfID laws do not affect me at all, neither positively nor negatively. Transphobes wanted to manipulate me and other people into thinking they threaten me somehow but this is #bullshit. Don't fall for it.

If that were true, several societies with such laws should have already have fallen. I'm still waiting. This didn't happen, therefore it's fearmongering.

Wuzzy, to Germany
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

just passed a new law, called , that grants , and people the right to change their official name and gender without much bureaucracy. It takes in effect at Nov 1.

What they need to do is request it as some office, wait 3 months, then request again and it's official.

Wuzzy,
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

This will replace an old law that in the past forced trans people to divorce or even undergo operation in some cases, just so they can change name + gender marker. This was ruled unenforcable a few years ago. And to this day, trans people have/had to get the approval of bureaucrats who claim to be psychological experts (they often aren't) in a long, demeaning and expensive (thausands of euros) procedure, where they ask EXTREMELY intrusive personal questions.

On Nov 1, it will be nuked forever.

Wuzzy,
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

So all is good and well for trans, inter and non-binary people in Germany now, right? Well, not really. The law has many "ifs" and "buts".

People have to wait 3 months before their change counts. A pointless chicane. Marriage does not know such waiting times, and for good reason.
Most absurd is the fact that the gender change does NOT count in the case of imminent war. In Germany, only men can be forced to enlist to the army. So yes to self-id, until it actually matters. 🤡 GENIUS.

Wuzzy, to Germany
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

Apparently the #SciHub censorship in #Germany is "just" a #DNS block, so it's not very elaborate.

But that's not the point. The point that people even DARE to do this type of censorship in the first place. This is #evil and wrong.

This is the result of #copyright ideology taken to its extreme. But I don't think this is the end point. #Copyright maximalists want to further and further a commercialized, expensive Internet only for the privileged few.
