The Y2K bug is a great illustration that a well-handled potential disaster looks like “nothing happened” in retrospect. The fact that Y2K seemed to be a non-event is a testament to how seriously people took this emergency, and how everyone buckled down and averted a worldwide infrastructure disaster.

I started working at Honeywell Aerospace (AlliedSignal back then) in 1998, and by that time people were already working on Y2K issues. We were in the GPS navigation business, and there were real issues that would have caused aircraft navigation to go awry unless they were fixed.

People buckled down, found the bugs, ran simulations, got FAA sign-offs, and deployed the fixes to all affected aircraft well before Y2K. Thanks to the effort, “nothing happened”. But I assure you (bad) things would have happened if we did nothing. https://infosec.exchange/@tychotithonus/111670219441506220

Yep, I worked that weekend and saw several systems break. Fortunately nothing we couldn't work around. We were actually quite lucky, as management decided that instead of doing the relatively cheap upgrade of our mainframe dumb-terminal system, we would instead write a whole new server-based PC system - the week before Y2K we still hadn't had a successful overnight batch run yet! Made it by the skin of our teeth.

OMG!!!

For years, the antivirus software company #avast harvested information from users’ web browsers without their consent.

And SOLD that data!

Though I have never used any of their products, I pray that this company is sued into oblivion.

What an abhorrent deception! https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/22/24080135/avast-security-privacy-software-ftc-fine-data-harvesting

Agreed. I just "updated" to Windows 11 (I didn't want to) and one of the (many) things I hate about it is the disappearing scroll-bar arrow! So, Microsoft, to make the invisible arrow appear, you have to hover over it, so you have to find the right spot to hover over something that you can't see... unless you find the right spot when the arrow is invisible. Didn't think that through did you...

Before I say what it is, I am NOT posting this as clickbait (which is how it's often used)! 😂 I'm posting this as a Maths teacher who knows this topic inside-out and wants to help people to understand it better. There are MANY mistakes that people make and get the wrong answer, and I'm going to cover them in bite-size chunks each week for a few weeks

So 8÷2(1+3)=? What is the answer (bonus: and WHY is it the answer)?

Imposter syndrome is something we often talk about, but what do we DO about it? I think our industry has a major problem in the way we make each other feel about our skills and experience. As a teacher, trainer and technical coach, I spend a lot of time trying to help people get over their insecurities and get them to a place where they can not only learn effectively, but enjoy learning (rather than feeling insecure about what they don't know). >>>

There is just no question in my mind that the culture of the fediverse (by any name) is a better model for civil discussion. But oddly, even many of its biggest champions have largely returned to Twitter, or pivoted to Threads, which may be a step up from Nazis, but that’s a pretty fucking law bar.

I noticed that and I'm thinking some of them aren't checking where the engagement is coming from. I recently, in a rare moment, engaged in some conversation there (I was all up to date with here, so, oh well, let's see what's happenning there), and one time I got back on I had 8 notifications, but I checked the profiles and 7 of them were likes from porn bots (and only 1 of those 7 was "this profile is hidden due to suspicious activity").

On one hand, I’m very dubious of AI-generated recipes as they could generate some dangerous recipes, on the other hand, TikTok hacks and YouTube short have been lying to an entire generation of cooks about what is possible.

Basically, don’t trust any recipe online without thinking through it critically.

It'd be great if you could get someone, anyone who is responsible for your Maths programming to read https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110897908266416158 - in particular when I covered the topic of e-calcs https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/111164851485070719 where I covered the DIFFERENT ways that the different MS products do it wrong. The Windows "standard" calc says that 2+3x4=20, in "Scientific" mode it says that's 14 but also says 8/2(1+3)=8/(1+3), etc.

Fun fact: That song uses a sample from a 1979 Gary Numan album track, M.E. Apparently it also uses a sample from the 1980 single This Wreckage, but I've never been able to identify exactly where it is (and I know I'm not alone in that), but the whole song is based around the M.E. sample, so that's unmissable. 🙂

I’ve been posting about wanting blogging to feel more like posting on here forever and…I think this gets me there. Why bother hosting a #blog and all of that hassle when your #Mastodon account could literally be a blog?

It’s amazing what a well-maintained API enables in for client apps like this. When the UI is in play, Mastodon effectively becomes infrastructure

Yeah, that's basically what I did with https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110897908266416158 - each week I covered a sub-topic with a 6-7 post mini-thread, and now I can fine-tune link to specific parts/posts when needed. i.e. the whole push for this is summed up by when I talked about e-calculators (the bane of Maths teachers/tutors) at https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/111164851485070719 having covered all the relevant mathematical theory by that point (which I can also link to specific posts as needed).

As a Maths teacher/tutor, I see a lot of students who THINK they are bad at Maths, but what I invariably find is their arithmetic skills are actually poor (the standard is to be able to answer an up to 12 times table question in 2 seconds, and we're talking not even close for these students), which is like trying to build a house on faulty foundations. Invariably once I start getting them up to speed with it they start feeling CONFIDENT with Maths now, and don't hate it anymore!
