Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

I fixed a bug in Adafruit-GFX-Library that's been bugging me for a while. The inability to work with fonts larger than about 90pt. It occurs because they used 8-bit signed ints for the character offsets and they overflow. I also updated their font converter makefile to run properly on MacOS:
https://github.com/bitbank2/Adafruit-GFX-Library

Pictured is Roboto_Thin_100, which would fail to convert/display properly with their version of the code.

I learned some days ago how #moisture gets trapped inside #sealed enclosures used for #electronics when exposed to daily cycles of heat and cold.

The cold creates lower pressure inside. If that overpowers the seals, then outside air gets sucked in, carrying moisture. This extra moisture can condense inside and accumulate at the bottom.

In the next warm part of the cycle, if some air is expelled because of the higher pressure, that moisture is not carried out because it is in a liquid state.🧵

francc,
@francc@mastodon.online avatar

Repeat this a lot of times, and you will get the electronic circuit diving inside the enclosure 😂

I want to measure how the humidity and pressure fluctuate inside an enclosure that I'm prototyping for an industrial composting temperature sensor, so I assembled a quick hack with an Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2 running SensorWatcher that will report that every 10 minutes. The sensors are an HTU31D for humidity and a BMP388 for pressure.🧵

The Rwanda Bill (UK) "is a shameful and performatively cruel law that will risk people's lives and betray who we are as a society."

We've signed an open letter alongside 250 other civil society organisations to oppose this attack on human rights and the rule of law by an increasingly dangerous, authoritarian government in the UK.

Anyone in Toronto who can take a 9 yo dog with special needs?

Mac was shot when he was 2, some bullet fragments are still in. He needs pain medication. He's also reactive to loud noises (hard to blame him!)

My friend has had him for 7 years. Mac is a very good boy. However my friend is struggling with major health issues with no way out and has tried for MONTHS to find a rescue that would take Mac. My friend has no spoons left. And the vet suggested euthanasia. This coming Saturday.

Other major traders already booked tables. More in the wings signed up and we now have a FULL two days of speakers. So if you’re a MikroTik Trainer/Consultant wishing to speak all we can do now is put you on a reserve list in case anyone drops out at the last minute. So what’s stopping you from coming? 😁 https://mtpc.world

Today I learned that “sundown towns” with their daily siren blasts that remind non-white people to leave town STILL EXIST.

This Nevada town stopped their daily sirens only LAST YEAR, and only because Nevada had passed a law that prohibits their use. Their Town Board Chairman even entertained both-siding the issue during a session. How many more of these towns still exist that carry on this explicitly racist practice?

It will be a few days before we get official confirmation from the National Grid, but I’m calling it now: 2023 was the year renewables overtook fossil fuels as the largest contributor to British electricity generation. In the 12 years I’ve been running National Grid: Live at https://grid.iamkate.com electricity generation from fossil fuels has fallen from an average of 25.1GW to 10.2GW, while renewables have risen from 2.5GW to 10.8GW.

Figures for 2023: Demand 29.6GW Fossil fuels 10.2GW Renewables 10.8GW Other sources 5.9GW Transfers 2.7GW
