#HappyHalloween! I have loved Halloween since I was a kid. Christmas was nice enough, but you had to dance to Santa’s tune. It was a whole month of being on your best behavior and hoping not to get busted by the big man or his little narc elves. But Halloween was just the opposite. It was the only day of the year where we were encouraged to break the rules. When else could you dress in whatever bizarre fashion you wanted, go out after dark, go to the homes of strangers, threaten them, and be rewarded with candy? I know it’s not quite the same these days because it’s all big safety zones and trunk or treat, and I won’t knock it. The world has changed. But yes, truth be told, I do think kids today are a bunch of Halloweenies. They come sauntering up to the door in no hurry with their knee-banging plastic pumpkins half-full of goodies. What kind of haul is that?

NatalieDavis,

We carried pillowcases and moved like lightning, sweeping through entire neighborhoods like hobo-dressed tornadoes. Then afterward would begin the great candy barter, trying to accumulate even more deliciousness by swapping with friends and family. It was a magical night and an epiphany for me. Halloween taught me that a little rule-breaking could lead to amazing things. I may not have been a hardcore scofflaw all my life, but I have been a rebel, someone who lived far outside the social norms and followed my own guidelines. I owe that life path to Halloween. And I still eat candy every day. So I wish you a Halloween night that makes you feel like a kid again, one filled with ghostly tales and monster movies and cute trick-or-treaters and an avalanche of chocolate. Stay safe, but have fun. Break a rule if you get a chance. No telling where that may lead.

#HappyHalloween

This is the consequence of soundbite budgeting. To hit arbitrary budget numbers not grounded in real choices, agencies seek "savings" by privatizing core functions any way they can. The result is key defense infrastructure, prisons and services controlled by unreliable oligarchs.

This "clarification" makes no sense. Isaacson wrote a blow-by-blow account of how Musk cut off Starlink access during the Ukrainian sea drone attack. Then his source, Musk, comes out with a diametrically opposed, retconned version, and Isaacson says, "Oh yeah, sorry, what he said."

Access journalism (read: bootlicking) is a blight on the profession.

"[Elon Musk's biographer Walter Isaacson] said, “To clarify on the Starlink issue: the Ukrainians THOUGHT coverage was enabled all the way to Crimea, but it was not. They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub-attack on the Russian fleet. Musk did not enable it, because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war.” "

Eastern Europeans understand the danger Russia poses completely and have done all they can. Western Europe and the US need to listen to the innumerable instances when Russian leaders, all the way to the top, say what they intend to do:

"Putin Promotes General With Eye for Attacking Eastern Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin promoted Lieutenant General Andrey Mordvichev to Colonel-General this week in a move that could provide alarming hints about the Kremlin’s plans for the future of the war in Ukraine. (...)When asked about the length of the war in Ukraine, Mordvichev responded that he has an understanding that Russia has to attack Eastern Europe. “If we’re talking about Eastern Europe, which we’ll have to attack, it will be longer and longer,” Mordvichev said. When asked if Ukraine is “only an intermediate stage,” Mordvichev replied that Ukraine is just a stepping stone to other attacks."

Appalling. The U.S. military should immediately rid itself of dependence on a capricious oligarch who feels entitled to conduct his own ignorant foreign policy. If this doesn't violate the Neutrality Act, it should. We privatize far too much that is vital to national security.

"Elon Musk gave biographer top Ukrainian official’s private messages without permission

Elon Musk gave his biographer private messages from a top Ukraine official without seeking permission, revealing exchanges over the entrepreneur restricting the Starlink internet service to thwart Kyiv’s military.

Ukrainian deputy prime minister Mykhailo Fedorov told the Financial Times on Friday that he was unaware that Walter Isaacson had obtained and published the messages in a forthcoming biography of Musk written with the billionaire’s full collaboration."

Day 559 of "Everything's going according to plan":

"Russia is covering aircraft with car tires, potentially to protect them from Ukrainian drones

Russian forces have started covering some of its attack aircraft with car tires, which experts say could be a makeshift attempt to protect them from Ukrainian drone strikes.

Satellite imagery from Maxar of Engels Airbase, deep inside Russia, shows two Tu-95 strategic bombers with car tires on top of the airframes.

CNN could not independently verify why the tires were placed on the aircraft, but experts say it could be a crude attempt at not only adding another layer of protection against Ukrainian drones but also to reduce the aircrafts' detectability aircrafts visibly, especially at night."

"Ukraine War, Day 554: Europe Still Buying Russian Oil and Gas

(...) Despite sanctions over Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, European countries are still importing Russian energy supplies.
While Germany has weaned itself off dependence on Russian gas, Europe’s purchases of liquified natural gas have increased by 40% since the invasion. European Union members have bought more than half of Russia’s LNG on the market in 2023.
