My mother-in-law, then 78 years old, died of Covid on this date three years ago.

Johnson's response to the pandemic was always knowingly callous. We don't need an inquiry to make that call, but I will never not be angry that his mishandling of the crisis caused so much grief, so much misery, and so much death.

@EyalL Yeah, slaughtering civilians is never, EVER, justified. The fact that you're willing to hand wave away the deaths of scores of innocent civilians, many of them children, is more than a little depressing.

Hamas are awful, and I condemn their actions, but this mass slaughter of non-combatants is not the answer. The only conclusion one can draw is that a great many folk consider Palestinian life to be less valuable than that of their own tribe.

@EyalL Yeah, if you truly believe that slaughtering thousands and thousands of innocent civilians is somehow not a war crime you are, in every regard, just as much a fanatic as the members of Hamas. You're essentially saying that their innocent civilians have less right to live than yours. That's the logic of fascist monsters everywhere.

I once had a white South African roommate. The things she said, like "it was a fair split of land," "they destroyed their part bc they're savages," "we had to protect ourselves from their violence," I was only 19 and knew it was bullshit. What's the excuse of educated adults now?

I watched the first episode of Fall of the House of Usher on #Netflix yesterday. My spouse wanted to try it (but it's too spooky for them 💀🤡🩸).

I like scary stuff but realized I've become distrustful of these sprawling Netflix #horror series, which rarely seem to have anything resembling a coherent beginning, middle and end. If I'm wrong about this one I might give it another go but there's so many good scary movies I've never watched. #SpookySeason

@kitoconnell Well, Mike Flanagan's last Netflix series Midnight Mass was terrific with a very, very clear narrative structure and some really rewarding storytelling.

I've not watched Usher yet, but I can certainly vouch for his last serial.

The former Riddrie Cinema on Cumbernauld Road in the east end of Glasgow. Constructed in the Art Deco Moderne style, this beautiful and stylish building was designed by James McKissack. It's considered one of the best preserved 1930s suburban super-cinemas in Scotland.

A few years ago I heard a story from a Dubliner with a Polish surname but no recent Polish ancestry about her father being brought up in court on speedy charges. The judge, looking at the very Polish surname on the docket, assumed the defendant was a recent immigrant and asked him only if he spoke any English. He responded, "a little." The judge asked no more questions, and he was then issued a fine and released.

Observers later recounted that locals rooted for the Black troops. Like the Battle of Bamber Bridge a year earlier, this event underscored the racism Black troops faced as well as the disconnect between how they were treated overseas vs in their own country.

These threads have all been so informative. It's a topic I always want to know more about, and I'm looking forward to reading some of those books when I have the time.

My late father grew-up near a US base in Northern Ireland and had very fond recollections of the African-American servicemen stationed there. He recalled he and his brothers being given candy and comic books.

The Duke of Cambridge keeps on running his mouth about population growth in Africa of all places.

It's likely that a "World City" will emerge in South Africa or maybe Nigeria. Possibly more than one in the region. Africa has many big cities. But nothing on the order of a New York, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, São Paulo...

This means population growth. And just like every other region in the world it will have an impact.

The Duke can go bulldoze some London suburbs if he cares about nature.

The BBC report I’ve just watched on Climate Change contained the phrase “but there are those who reject those models.” Which is true, but we don’t need to legitimise those lethally stupid gowls by pretending that their mix of wishful thinking and purblind rejection of empirical evidence is somehow worth considering.

But yeah, it’s not like the future of all human life is at stake. No need to carefully weigh the pitfalls of legitimising cranks and anti-science nihilists.

The general notion floating around seems to be that "one simply could not" put a former president in a prison. Unthinkable!

But, I mean, would he be any any real exceptional danger when compared to other inmates? I don't think so.

Is there a way to force all involved to really explicitly articulate their reasons for special treatment should it be needed due to a conviction? It seems like a lot of classist BS to me.

And, I will also take the house arrest or whatever, but I will question it.

Sure, American prisons are grotesque and deeply inhumane, and I normally argue for penal reform, But surely the genius who definitely wrote Art of the Deal all by himself will be able to use that deal-making expertise to carve himself a comfortable perch in any State Pen.
