I studied the #holocaust in college, met survivors of the camps. I visited Auschwitz and let the reality of the holocaust sink in deeply. I took the lesson of "never again" seriously. But I learned to take "never again" to apply not only to Jews but to Palestinians, indigenous people, migrants, the homeless, and the underprivileged everywhere. Just now, the lives of #Palestinians are in peril and arming the state of Israel to destroy Gaza and Palestinians must be stopped.

By April of 2023 I quit ever even checking on Twitter. I decided today to go back and officially delete my unused and useless account. I was surprised to find so many “sexy young women” (at least according their profile pictures) following me recently. But why? To build fake numbers? The university I used to work for has declared "hate speech" constitutionally protected, which should therefore be permitted/supported comfortably even in the classroom. If a professor calls it out - maybe calls #haters "twits," the professor's speech is NOT protected. The prof is sanctioned, removed from the classroom. #hatespeech #doublestandards #freespeech

As the billionaires to continue to suck all the money off, life in the trenches of every day work get worse and worse and worse. Minimum wage remains a poverty level wage, dragging down everyone else's wages and work conditions. Really, people, this is not okay.

Populist logic: We the people will not bow down to elitists. To aid us in our struggle, we will elect an authoritarian who will live in gold flaked mansions, travel in private jets, commute in a limo, be excused from adhering to the law, accept gifts from foreign dignitaries and corporate moguls, and sacrifice their vast riches to work on our behalf.

It IS strange isn't it? At the same time that Trump is lauded for giving up infinite wealth, he needs to remain wealthy to be attractive to his people. I think, in fact, the glitzy golden obsessive opulent image of his wealth is something that his people love. They want to be him: disgustingly wealthy, and disgusting. No accountability for one's worst behavior.

Around 1972 I took an undergraduate college course in Holocaust Literature. At the time I was deeply grateful to live in a country that "would never be" susceptible to Nazi ideology. I now know that everything I learned in that course prepared me to be extremely alarmed about the US Extreme Right. If we do not fight back vigorously, this situation will escalate. And the tools of violence and repression are far more sophisticated now than they were in Nazi German.

    I migrated in fall 2022 and have seen no demonizing of twitter refugees. Early on there was some tension about people trying to make Mastodon over in Twitter's image. But I have been nothing but at home here. What experiences are you having?
