Even though I never cooked when I was living in Southeast Asia (you.. really don’t need to), paying attention to food procurement and techniques helped me level up when I started cooking when I left that region.

(Eating street food there is often cheaper than buying ingredients and cooking yourself. In almost all SEA cities)

There’s a lot of stuff I felt I just ‘knew’ because I was around people who dealt with food all the time

@skinnylatte the local Vietnamese grocery is ten times better than what I find in the local chain grocery. They're high turn over and always fresh. I can buy ten wilted basil leaves in a plastic box at the Albertsons or I can buy a whole bag for like $4 that's super fresh. Plus every kind of green and other veggie I want, cheaper and better. The only drawback is it's 15 miles away for me. Same for fish. I can't even buy a whole fish anywhere near me.

Went to the camera store a couple weeks ago and there was an as-is Rolleiflex 6006 setup for $500. Three lenses, 50mm, 80mm and 150mm, spare film back, batteries that are completely dead, charger and case. Even if it weren't working it would be ok as a fixer upper. But I managed to get a new battery (3D printed modern replacement) and it all seems to be working great.

Found this Shriekback album “Oil & Gold” at a local record shop. Cost me C$5.00.

Contains the song “Nemesis”, which is awesome.

Will be hearing this as I go on a walk with my Walkman.

just scored a giant 8-person tent for £140. it's not the warmest thing but I'll be able to stand up in it and that's way more important. hilariously it was cheaper to buy it than rent the exact same tent.

Affekt,

@gsuberland a good quilt and sleeping pad is way more important to comfort than the tent

Has anyone used #JLCPCB assembly service with some components skipped? Does the paste still get applied to those pads, or does JLC remove those openings from the stencil? If not, I can do it myself, just curious 🙂

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@gsuberland @arturo182 oh neat. I'll have to start using them for assembly.

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@gsuberland @arturo182 is that becoming more standard? The manufacturers we use in China for our bigger EVM production do not do that.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

@siracusa @MichaelWhelan I saw it in a used bookstore a couple months back and had to pick up a copy for the coffee table. I used to spend a lot of time as a kid looking at the artwork.

I still say Trump won't pick a VP. From what I've seen he wouldn't need to pick one legally unless he is elected... I don't see anything about voters getting to know who it would be before the election... or am I misunderstanding these rules.

There is simply no benefit to picking a VP. Too many forces want Trump gone so having a named successor is dangerous for him.

When he dies the world ends as far as he cares, why would he plan for that?

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird 12th Amendment stipulates how the VP is elected. I suppose he could not pick one but then the electors still have to vote for one. That would be an interesting turn of events. Would individuals start running for VP? Either that or no votes are cast for VP and you end up with the senate picking.

That Utah bathroom snitch form?

Uhm, so yeah they left the database readable to everyone. So everyone could read all the snitch submissions, with all the names, locations, dates, images, etc.

On the upside it's just full of memes.

Affekt,

@thomasfuchs the people stuck implementing or contracting out for this garbage are probably just normal state employees who don't necessarily agree with the law. I bet there's some folks doing their bare minimum to comply and keep their jobs. All this kind of work would be done in SLC and SLC definitely is way more reasonable and progressive than the rest of the state or most of the suburbs. One of the many reasons I left there a long time ago.

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs yeah, honestly the best state for outdoors activity in the country.

@skinnylatte I got punched in the chest by a lady in Ohio for saying I didn't really like potatoes (not hard). She immediately apologized and I thought it was hilarious that it was her gut reaction to someone not really liking potatoes. Very stereotypical mid-westerner.

For some reason, the grocery store near me keeps raisins not near the nuts, nor near the trail mix, nor near the snacks, nor the fresh fruit, nor near the baking supplies (which include a different set of nuts).

Instead, they keep the raisins near the tea.

I angrily wandered around the store way too long tonight.

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online I think grocery stores do this on purpose so you have mental static switching stores. Once you know all the tricky organization in one store, you go to another and don't want to relearn the mystic ways.

When I talk about video games, the stuff that gets the most comments and likes are old retro PC games that got released in the 80s, 90s, and ‘00s.

I think there’s two reasons for this.

First, the Fediverse skews older and if you’re over 40, you tend to have nostalgia for that stuff. Makes sense.

But also, that’s an area of retro gaming that doesn’t get a whole lot of conversation. Most retro gaming conversations are dominated by consoles. Many people don’t realize how deep and varied PC gaming was back then – and still is.

Many people missed out on PC games.

Affekt,
@Affekt@hachyderm.io avatar

@atomicpoet I worked in a Software Etc. in the mall as a teenager in the 90s. We had way more PC games than console games. I loved to dig through our discount bin for gems such as "Stunt Island", which is one of my top flight sims of all time, I should go dig up a copy.

Unprocessed photo, taken in southern Quebec. We were extremely fortunate that (a) my house was smack in the middle of the line of totality, and (b) the sky was perfectly clear throughout the event.

Now, with 9x bracketing, I have a mere 639 photos to evaluate, process and merge. But what an experience! Awesome, really.
