Why? Rina Sawayama has a unique presence in contemporary pop music. Her introspective and intimate lyrics paired expertly with melody, a voice that sits differently than many other singers, and a powerful vulnerability. As a Japanese British artist and pan sapphic woman, she brings a unique perspective through her music that I know captivates me.
Where to start?
Her 2021 performance of her single, “Chosen Family,” with Sir Elton John is moving and perfect. The fact that Elton plays to her lyrics and composition wholeheartedly is beautiful and speaks to the talent he sees in this young queer artist. There is no better ode to the beauty of chosen family that defines queer life.

Why? What makes for better emo punk than the overwhelming intensity and borderline toxicity so many of us find in the highs and lows of lesbian love? Dyke Drama is Sadie Switchblade’s solo project, and this music lives up to this name. While her music will likely speak to any sapphic, gotta say as a trans dyke, it hits especially hard.
Where to start?
“Crying in a Bathroom Stall” is the song where Sadie first grabbed me. An aggressive guitar riff capturing that moment where we just want to burst into tears and scream from love lost. And with the last line, my heart breaks, “Do all tall girls die alone?”
I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift’s latest album TTPD the past few days. When it released I was rather astonished it has 31 songs. After listening, I was equally surprised that more than half are actually really good and not just filler. The opening and title tracks are really good.
One that really stands out is “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” which sounds like a subtoot about some dude that broke Taylor’s heart. It wouldn’t be a Taylor Swift album if it didn’t have a one or two of those.
But what I like about it is it’s in 14/8… or 7/4 if you can count it that way. In the verses it almost has a polyrhythmic feeling as well. Music theory is weird. The music is really cool though. I love odd time sigs.
Another stand out for me is “Down Bad” which is kind of about being depressed after a break up… or like, being shown a new way and then losing it.
I also really like “Guilty as Sin”… a song about an affair of the heart. A friend sent a tiktok vid of “Guilty as Sin” but it’s a #wlw version.
🎶 What if she's written 'mine'
on my upper thigh
Only in my mind?🎶
The young woman also has a wlw version of “Down Bad” and it hits even harder. Ugh. I hadn’t heard the phrase Down Bad before but yeah…
I’ve been down bad.
I feel ya Taylor.
Quote: “Whore, yariman, kuzuningen, shine, shine, shine,” Meiko-kun gloated. The air in front of me seemed to waver like smoky glass and beyond I could see a landscape of tumbled monuments, shifting ash, and flickering shadows. The dismal sound of wailing voices filled my ears.

“I really enjoyed this. Your characters are like real friends…I say it’s a home run!!! You knocked it out of the park…I don't often laugh out loud while reading books, but this—oh dear, I think I almost woke my kids up a couple of times.”
No good deed goes unpunished. As Ume discovers when she rescues Shiomi. Neither Shiomi nor the jealous, vengeful ghost that stalks her appreciates the act. Something they both make clear. As for Ume’s partner, Tomo, he is less than thrilled at the intrusion of an unpleasant third into their relationship. “I know I told you to find someone who would appreciate your advances, but I really question your taste.”
Come, follow Ume-san, Shiomi-san, and the increasingly exasperated Tomo as the three explore their attraction for each other in a world where creepy things wait and watch from the shadows.
