There needs to be better awareness and support structure for postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. It is truly horrifying and when you’re a parent, you often don’t realize it’s happening until things are really bad. The mother has really scary intrusive thoughts (sometimes intensely violent) and often does not feel safe to open up and get help. There are many tragic stories out there where things spiraled completely out of control and ended up in infanticide or suicide, sometimes both.
Mothers and their partners/spouses preparing to have children need to learn how to identify it and have a plan for what to do if it happens. It’s more common than you might think, and support is needed when it happens.
So many people have this fantasy of getting rich enough to have a little farm. We all need that connection to the land, a slower way of life and a little social connection but we are stuck in these modern jobs that pay the bills and don’t have the resources to own a farm. What if we had appartments and coworking spaces in proximity to farms/urban farms, and people could spend an hour or so each day doing some farm work, then do their remote job the rest of the day? #thoughts#farm#community
both free-thinkers/individualists/leaders and the opposite (followers) are necessary for a functioning group
the more backup plans (exits/entries into the tunnels) you have, the less likely it is that you’ll end up trapped or with no options.
sheer luck in numbers can be very useful. if the group does lots of different things at once, odds are higher that one of them will find something the group wants or needs.
not every member of a group needs to be self-sufficient. the more members of a group there are, the truer this is.
Just trying lots of things is one of the surest methods of success.
Simply because most or all of the group is doing one thing doesn’t mean it’s the right thing. Since groups have decision-making inertia, it’s possible that they fell into doing that thing either through sheer chance, or because of a fact that was true once but no longer is.
I'm wondering if you have any #thoughts on the "#Web#Environment#Integrity" proposal by some #Google folks. I wrote a short thread about it, but would be interested in hearing your thoughts before reading it (if you do read it - I'm not demanding it 😀 ).
That isn't to say that people don't act in problematic ways, but when it comes to creating a better world, we have to change the way systems operate in order to see change in people at scale.
I want to try the digital #Zettelkasten method to organize my #thoughts. It's not so much to enhance #productivity but to gain a deeper understanding and organic growth over time. I have heard people using #Obsidian#NoteTakingApp for it. Are there any tips or other apps to check out?
My autistic grandfather dutifully cared for his wife (the grandmother I never got to meet) at the end of her fight with breast cancer.
Grandma Mary really wanted marijuana joints to cope with her pain, but the doctors only permitted her to use morphine (this was in the late 1970's). She couldn't administer it to herself so my grandfather injected it into her veins for her.
He told me this story one summer day when I was over at his apartment with my father. I was 10 years old at that time .
What prompted the story was grandpa Bill giving us a tour of his tackle box. I saw a syringe next to the rubber worms, and I asked what it was for. He explained that the fake worms injected with air made them seem life like to the fish, they'd wriggle about in the water, and were more likely to get a bite.
Then, he paused and told the story of that needle, and what it was originally for. After grandma Mary died, he kept all those remnant from that time, and everything seemed to have a repurpose . I watched him grimace as he took the morphine syringe in his hand and he angrily snapped it in two, and threw it away.
That was the first time I ever seen the gentle man look angry, actually, full of rage.
Only now, as I lay here in the hospital bed, after having a dose of Dilaudid, as the burning hot pain relief sears through my veins and breaks open my weary heart. I feel my grandmother, and I didn't have to meet her, to begin to feel her pain.
I feel grandpa's pain too. Repurposing the hurtful memories, the tools we are are actually given , when what we needed was something totally different. The autistic tendency to survive and "make due" with rampant unfairness.
The thing is, I like it here w/in the Fediverse. Perfect, no, but what is? I’m not one to quickly jump ship or to try different platforms simultaneously, especially when you know who owns/runs them. That actually sounds repulsive & time consuming. Being here has slowly started to change how I feel about social media for the better, & that’s a good thing. 🙂 #thoughts#fediverse
I'm hearing a lot of complaints about Fall Out Boy's new single that extends “We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel and covers 1989 to 2023.
While I get that wanting it to be in chronological order would be in keeping with the original, I really like it. The tone is a bit angrier, but that is completely appropriate given everything going on.
Because i set my #gentoo pc to be #wayland only without X. . . i felt need to have strong alternative to word processor.
Now i think #minimal environment can be really useful. Not having access to libreoffice forces me to find decent replacement for everyday life doc writing.
Ofc. i could go easy way and install word processor on old laptop ... but that means no real gain... without need, or any other motivation it's hard to learn anything.
Remember, starting at the bottom (of a new job/career/hobby) is often the best way to learn something new, whether you are 20, 80, or something else. I started over twice—once at 40 & again at 42. While I enjoy the job I have now, there’s more I’d like to do, given the chance. #life#thoughts#learning#hope#job
Big Fish or Bigger Pond? Rethinking the Future of Tech Companies
Challenging the status quo in tech: Could a future with numerous smaller, cooperative organisations be more beneficial than a handful of giants dominating the scene? Unity in diversity – perhaps it’s time for a change
Fell down the rabbit hole of finding some new people to follow. The joy of discovering new accounts because of a boost of another is kinda great. Life doesn’t always permit the time to leisurely browse, but today it did.
I started using mastodon when musk bought twitter and kbin with all the reddit API shitshow. I like the idea of the fediverse but how does it have longevity?
#believe or not, some people do things for the love of it and not for profit. it's very sad that even the very idea of this, seems be lost on on the internet today.
the earliest public online communities were dial in BBS. People would buy 2nd PC's (when PCs cost a couple of grand), get second phone lines (some time more than 1!) modems etc. and set up a dial in BBS because it was their hobby. For the fun of it. For the pleasure of it. For the thrill of it. Some people rock sneakers, some people soup up cars, some people carve wood but they do so because it is a hobby., It makes them happy, they meet new people, they learn new things. The idea of making money from it ? well it never even enters the heads of most of them.
##Thoughts of revenue stream, and clicks, and engagement are all the bastard children of capitalism , which infects all hobbies like a virus. Skating, fashion, Bmx, gaming, fitness, - nothing is immune from the foul contagion.
#the immaculate beauty of a federated social media platform like KBIN is that you can host your own instance, a for a sizeable number of users, for like £20 a month on a VPS. It plugs into all the other instances using internet magic, and you can be the boss. If instead you wnant to kick in a couple of quid to your favourite host , have at it. If you're broke, well, you're still welcome.
community is a thing and it will outlive capitalism.
My wife and her best friend accused me of having an affair, then got angry when I didn't have one
This is a repost. I am not the original author (see disclaimer at the bottom)....
Realistically how does the fediverse make money and remain sustainable? only donations?
