I've got a strange one for all my friends today.

I rebased a local branch of a repo and did the usual push --force to overwrite the remote branch.

A git status shows everything is great but five seconds later is showing the same conflict due to the diverging branches.

If I exit out of VSC I can run git push --force and the conflict doesn't return.

I can open the files in WebStorm and all is fine.

But the moment I open VSC the conflict returns

I've successfully had the charges refunded by my CC at least 2 years now and the charge appeared again for this year.

I signed into LastPass and sure enough, a premium subscription was again associated with my account. I canceled it - again.

Did LastPass send me a cancellation confirmation email? No. Is there a way for me to

prove I canceled it again? Not that I see.

Am I going to try and get a refund of premium this year? No. Does that mean I'm acknowledging that I made the purchase? Hell no. It's simply that #lastpass makes it a real pain to get a refund from them and the #creditcard companies don't make it much easier. I'd spend more "money" in time than I'd get back from disputing.

But...anyone know a good class action #lawyer if this happens next year? ๐Ÿคฌ

I've been thinking I need a #fun side project for when I'm not feeling working on big things. I have the source #code for a few old #DOS #games I've hacked on a few times.

The games were written in #QuickBasic (and it's predecessors) and in the past I've used #QB64 to get them running natively on Windows....

Now I'm thinking of using an #LLM (e.g. like that powering #github #copilot) to translate the code into a modern language.

Now the is, what should I use? The are simple turn-based , I'm open to using an if necessary, but think that , , etc. are overkill / not great fits.

Wondering what folks think is a good language to develop these games in?

, , C++, JS/TS, and C# are the five that come to the forefront of my mind.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

thinking about the magic ingredients that foster #tech #innovation. #XeroxPARC, #BellLabs, and #MIT's #TMRC appear frequently in the annals of #history - at least those I've read.

The #question is - how do we create such centers of innovation?

I'm still putting it together but I suspect there are at least four:

1 Time- Insane and copious amounts of it
2 Community- Multiple individuals who interact syngeristically
3 Space- A shared space for innovation to occur
4 Equipment- Raw materials

1/5

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

I'd also want to put some constraints on it, e.g., we know that #war can serve as a spur to innovation - but I'm not looking to see more death and destruction in the world.

We also know that necessity can push us in an innovative direction but I think this is as likely to push us in criminal or illogical directions as innovative.

In addition, I'd suggest two qualities this innovation should have:

  1. It should be actual rather than solely financial
  2. It should be popular not simply exist

2/5

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

Regarding Quality 1: This is not to say the product can't be financial in nature but that it should have wide societal benefits. Products that reduce financial complexity or burden, for example, would certainly qualify.

This isn't about the financial nature of the product but the derived societal benefit.

Regarding Quality 2: I'd suggest that this adds sub-reqs to community - specifically, one needs a combination of innovators and entrepreneurs.

3/5

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

Why don't we see more of these innovative communities?

  1. Time - TMRC, for example, benefited from the young, single, socio-economically stable demographic. I think the fluidity of time is also important, that ability to flow into and out of working on a project at all hours/days (something it is difficult to do ethically when one has responsibilities)

  2. Space - Similar to time, the constant availability of space - shared space specifically - is important.

4/5

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

Community (2) and Raw Materials (4) seem like the simpler ingredients, if one has (1) Time and (3) Shared Space.

Community arises from shared space (imho) and raw materials are (relatively) inexpensive.

@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

@johnefrancis I've heard the same. I wonder what caused this shift? Was there some sort of fusion between the university and commerce that occurred?

I'm also curious about how we could foster this sort of environment outside of academia.

If I give a group of individuals lots of time, a shared space, raw material, and the opp to build community - what will happen?

As a child I played a lot of video games and it was partially that which inspired my interest in tech - but externally I'm

okay, one more thing. from what I see there is no way to enable/disable #browser #extensions on a per tab basis.

for example, the extension I've been working on disables extensions on user defined block lists but when it disables the extension the #extension is disabled across all tabs, not just the relevant tabs.

usually this isn't a big issue, but for some (e.g. annotations, highlighting) it can cause disruption (requiring a page refresh).

thoughts?

"When we study the histiography of a pre-Englightenment culture, it is important to recognize the cognitive environment that drives [it] and to respect the integrity of it. The cognitive environment in the ancient world is one in which the directive activity of deity is of primary importance...In the view of the ancient Near East, even 'natural' occurrences are the result of divine activity."

I'm curious what you think of Walton's perspective. Is he correct in elevating deity as causation to a supreme place in pre-Enlightenment culture? How did ancient atheists understand reality?

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

@michael I am not sure how widespread atheism was. The Cambridge History of Atheism has chapters on atheism within the Ancient Near East, Japan, Greece, Rome, India, early Christian Europe, and early Islam - all pre-Enlightenment.

Depending on what strains certain religions such as Buddhism have long had atheistic elements.

Much depends on how we define atheism.

In sum, I must humbly acknowledge I don't know!

Anyone running #MediaWiki and #CirrusSearch and #OpenSearch together?

davidshq,
@davidshq@hachyderm.io avatar

@krisfreedain I've been digging around the web - and there isn't a lot - but it seems that MediaWiki dropped Elasticsearch when it changed licensing (over 7.11 I believe) but hasn't adopted something new (e.g. OpenSearch). So currently the best search for MediaWiki (CirrusSearch) is strapped to an outdated Elasticsearch...which really isn't ideal.

It does seem like the sentiment was that OpenSearch would be a good alternative but no movement...and the plugin is literally hard-coded to
