Yesterday I was very creative at our demonstration table in the museum: my first collage that isn't just paper & paint. There was no audience (people probably used the rare sunshine for outdoor events), but we had fun! Now some small embroidery in gold to finish it. Should I make more collages with textile parts? 🤔 @embroidery@fibrearts@fiberarts
Back to the succulent pillow project - time to sew all the pieces together! I'm figuring it out as I go along, as this is my first time sewing crochet, and the pattern I'm using doesn't really have any guidance.
Trying to evoke patterns of black and white tiling through weaving, referring to the floor of the chapel where it will be displayed. I used the clasped weft technique. This enables the two colours to be parallel on the weft and can be changed when wanted. Woven in is a nood, or a flexible led filament (in silicone) of white light. #textile @textilearts
Yarn people, textile people : I have found these amazing works. The woman who made them has died, and she never explained what her technique was. Embroidery? Crochet? Can any of you suggest one? Right and wrong sides shown #YarnCraft#TextileCraft#crafting#crochet#embroidery#textile
@codeandcontext So happy we are starting to work with our new Lab infrastructure! Tomorrow Sarah will help us install the AYAB module on our brother KH-930 knitting machine. Happy that I get the chance to explore the world of textile and knitting in my Lab! @yaxu dragged me into this field, still remembering the Algomech conference on unmaking and my visits to the Penelope Project. Now I am looking forward to creating patterns in textile with analog hardware and analog to digital interface yet to be developed. #textile, #hacking, #ayab
Today in Labor History February 24, 1912: The cops beat up women and children during the IWW-led Bread and Roses textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Three people died during the strike. Unknown numbers were injured. The police arrested nearly 300 workers during the two-and-a-half-month strike. The authorities framed and arrested IWW organizers Joseph Ettor and Arturo Giovannitti for murder.
Why fashion's '#recycling' is not saving the planet
"In Europe, most #textile waste is either dumped or burned. Only 22 percent is recycled or reused—and most of that is turned into insulation, mattress stuffing or cleaning cloths.
"Less than one percent of fabric used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing," the European Commission told AFP.
My mom sent me an e-mail with some photos in it last week of some new #quilts she has available, here is one of them, check it out! My mom likes doing really experimental stuff with quilts, this one's really modern, lots of awesome stuff going on in this one. It measures 72 x 84 in (183 x 213 cm), so it is nice and large. Let me know if you'd like to take a nap under this dazzling piece of #textile#art! ~~~ #quilt#arts#artwork#artist#artists#quilting#quilter#quilters#decor#textiles
A medieval unicorn riding blanket tapestry that just went to it's forever home. I wove it years ago, (having a little separation anxiety). 22"x30" not counting fringe. #weaving#textile#yarn

Reserved our spots a long while ago - for a #chusen#dye#factory#tour
This is in #Sakai south of #Osaka but away from the other places we'd visited* a few times. So a different set of trains & a bit of a walk (nice sunny morning with cool weather).
We'd seen info on chusen and #tenugui at the Sakai traditional crafts museum - that had nice displays and videos. But we wanted to dig a bit deeper, especially for the kids to see

A few more pics from the stellar essentially private tour we got (there was another bigger group, in Japanese, later) but we got personal attention and all our Qs answered.
Small space and everyone was working but accommodated as we were shown around.
The pots with long spouts to pour dye are ドヒン dohin and that's what #chusen is about - dye pouring.
Next the vacuum to pull the dye through

Here's a 28 s vid with a few stills first to show the dye being poured and then the vacuum to pull the dye through the fabric layers in the #chusen#dyeing process
