#selfhosting

Put it off for quite a while but I finally migrated from the deprecated linuxserver/unifi-controller container to the new linuxserver/unifi-network-application container to my unifi control plane.

I got a new switch that required at least unifi 8.1 and i was lagging behind on 8.0.27.

the new network-application requires a mongo db container. no big deal. but i had to export a full site backup and start from a clean slate with the new 8.1 system. no in-place upgrade supported. was fairly painless tbh, just a bit of a pallavah and an exercise in yak shaving i could have done without tonight. #selfhosting

Quick heads up: Kitten’s installer/downloads will be offline for a few minutes as I recreate kittens.small-web.org (the site that new Kittens are deployed to when they’re born) as it was originally on Ubuntu and sites deployed by Domain are now using AlmaLinux. Also, I am setting Kitten’s API version to 0 (it was initially set to 1) to signal that it is prerelease. When the version is back to 1 it will be because API version 1 is stable.

Wow @aral, thanks for developing them!

I did not know about , and at a first glance it reminds me a lot of @yunohost!

Did you consider integrating Domain with YunoHost, or make them interoperable? I believe it would be a huge win: is very mature and many years in the making, I believe a new and ambitious project such as Domain could truly benefit the stability and features of such a big software, while I think the YunoHost community would really enjoy the participation and help.

Maybe you could start by opening a thread on the forum, and we can see what people think 👀

It took me a few tries to get into the boot manager of the Minix Z100-0dB, but now Debian is installed.

And the first impression is great! Everything already feels very fast. Worlds better than with my Rock64 NAS. But I can only say more once I've run a few benchmarks and finished setting up my NAS.

Not intending to self-host Wordpress though - are there any good tools to convert Wordpress exports into something usable? I'm considering running a static blog off markup or something.

I have a home server with various services running (all isolated with different user accounts). The server has a small SSD and a big external HDD, but I'd like to make external backups to my cloud account. The cloud service has a proprietary command line application to sync data, so backups would ideally be date separated compressed tar files that it can then sync. An additional complication are PostgreSQL and SQLite databases that can't just be copied without risking breaking the integrity of the files.

How would you do the backups? Do you have some existing app that you could suggest? I'm sure I can whip up some script to do it, but I wouldn't mind if there was something already made.

Dropped some updates to selfh.st/apps this morning - tiles now have visible/clickable tags, URL properties have been added for sharing custom views with others, and I've added a ton of new project icons.

I'm completely open to feedback on future improvements, but probably won't consider adding any more details to the tiles to prevent them from becoming too cluttered.

And I was also mulling over some stuff related to the Major BBS restoration project work Ive had running as a side-task for the past few days, and this popped into my brain.

I’ve been self-hosting since self-hosting required a dial-tone…

Thats all, just thought I’d share. :P

I'm currently trying to migrate a #mastodon server from masto.host to self-hosted and having problems (I already shut down the server, so I'm posting from an old account).

Does somebody know which files in the backup are which in the mastodon migration guide?

I'm also having trouble with restoring the PostgreSQL backup ('pg_restore: error: connection to server on socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432" failed: FATAL: Peer authentication failed for user "mastodon"').

Thanks for any help!

(It would be nice if someone could boost this, because given that this is an old account, I don't think many people would see this post otherwise.)

It almost feels like Mastodon do not want us to self host. There is no direct link on the main webpage to install on server. Digging through the docs, finally found documentation and there is no Docker container or a package for any OS for easy installation. They require us to install from source along with all the dependencies. I don't mean to bad mouth it but they do not do enough to encourage self hosting (if not discourage).

Would like to know your opinions or ideas on how to self host it easily with minimum maintenance (auto upgrades, etc).

Hopefully I won't get crucified for this:

Today, I switched from Jellyfin to Plex after running Jellyfin for the last two and so years

Performance on mobile and Apple TV was unacceptable. It buffered every two seconds on mobile, even though it was direct play, and it straight-up just didn't work on Apple TV

I'm impressed with how easy it was to set Plex up, including its HW transcoding. I had to pull weird custom images for Jellyfin. In Plex, I pushed a button
