That seems like a lot.

“Nearly 3,500 subreddit forums are set to go private for 48 hours on Monday to protest Reddit's new pricing policy, BBC News reported.”

As a (former) Reddit user, I just joined #Kbin to watch and help support the potential #RedditMigration coming from that platform. Here is me there: @tchambers

And I just supported @ernest the creator of the platform, and so should you: suspect next week he will need all the support the Fedi can give.

Lastly, I love the phrase for the Federated Reddit alternatives as "the Threadiverse."

@kylewritescode and myself are discussing possibly starting up an #AllThingsTech Kbin instance and wanted some feedback to see if you'd be interested in us doing that and if so, would you sign up?

You can vote on the original poll that the @AllThingsTech account just posted via the link below.

For those in the #fediverse familiar with the #redditmigration and #lemmy, is there any point in spinning up my own instance? For example, for #Mastodon, the benefit of hosting my own, is my own domain name and being able to federate with other servers that the big ones have blocked. Though, from my understanding, hosting my own Lemmy would be like making my own subreddit? Or am I misunderstanding how it works? #Reddit

For everyone creating communities (#Lemmy instances) or "magazines" on #Kbin instances be mindful of the very real deficiencies that exist related to moderation, as @thisismissem writes about here (https://hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/110550824230711531). We're all both excited about the promise the #Fediverse brings and equally pissed at what is going on over on Reddit but there is real danger in growing communities using software that might not be ready for it. Read Emelia's post to gain more understanding of the potential pitfalls (and guidance around moderation). One thing I'll add is that botching this migration due to immature software could turn people off from the idea of Reddit-esque fediverse communities indefinitely.

@jerry I'm certainly no expert on community creation/management much less moderating mid-large size communities but there are certainly others within the .infosec sphere (👀 @tweedge) who could weigh in. Maybe it would be helpful to post a guide of some kind (not saying you need to create it but you could help market it) which fairly warns #fedia and #infosecpub channel admins that moderation tools are lackluster and to tread carefully as they scale out. Happy to volunteer my own time/perspectives on adding something to a larger wiki for your various Fediversal properties as needed!

Reddit migration recommendations?

I need about 30 minutes of good quality scrolling per day. Mastodon carries me through 10 minutes. Where am I going for another 20 minutes of good scrolling and decent discussion.

Which alternate “reddits” are already a reasonable size, show the most promise and can sustain 20 minutes of scroll?

I follow links and read articles, so a decent link:shitpost ratio quickly fills in the time.

I’m sure others are in the same boat?

(Federated is a bonus but not necessary). #reddit #redditMigration #lemmy #kbin

Wow , thanks for the help! I am genuinely surprised at how close the results were. It looks like the recommendation is to try out the ( and / or ) first - but only by 1.8% over ! Y'all must know that I've been getting frustrated with lately. I also appreciate the recommendations for other things to explore.

Now the question is Kbin or Lemmy? Or both? (any thoughts?)

"Is this what the internet felt like?"

I’ve been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?

Followed by the following comments:

When the world wide web was fresh? Absolutely, it was.

That’s about how I remember it. Having your own webpage, running servers from your PC, dabbling in all kinds of new communication methods.
Heck, friend of mine ran an email and shell account ISP from his bedroom for a number of years.

You can also comment from self-hosted mastodon :D this is awesome

Folks, kids are rediscovering the freedom of the old internet.

How ironic that this was caused by an internet corporation CEO getting greedy.

I'm really not sure if I should fully commit to Lemmy/KBin. I have accounts on both platforms but I just don't feel as connected to them. I think it's because I've been using Reddit so much in my life that I've gotten used to the UI and communities.

My current plan is just to wait it out until one reddit-alternative platform becomes the overwhelming popular platform. Then I'll probably start using that one.

Anyone with me?

With regards to the shortcomings of federation and buy-in friction for new users, that op-ed republished by arstechnica isn't wrong.

I don't know what to do about it. I don't have the bandwidth or knowledge to fix the problem. But I would support those who can lower the friction for new users and assist with the growth of non-billionaire-owned platforms.

Oh #Mastodon. After last year's #TwitterMigration THIS is what you became known for.

The #Fediverse could have caught on back THEN if you were as welcoming as #Kbin/#Lemmy has been to the #Redditmigration but instead the loudest group was the Mastodon Homeowner's Association.
