Another day at the office . . . I realize I don't look so cool when I'm reading a chart and trying to nail the click track . . . There’s stuff going on in my headphones that you can’t hear that made this a little more interesting than usual . . . #musicproduction#mymusic#fedijams#drums#drumming#recording#fedimusic#music
I played this record in the car 🚘 and decided to hear it in the lounge. I started in Apple Spatialize Audio but it was rubbish and switched to #qobuz#lossless via #roon. The haze cleared up. Apple compresses the main channels to make all the Dolby Atmos other stuff fit in an AirPods Pro pipe. The Maggies didn’t like it. Tubby bass.
This is a very slow, meditative music with a sonorous improvisational melody. Well the opener is. The second track is a lively piano opened #hardbop tune.
Well my Mac Pro is back up and running. It took two days to install my plugins (the 290 Native Instruments plugins and libraries took the most time). And I’ve lost the vast majority of my Plugin Alliance and Harrison plugins due to their incompetence at integrating with their new parent companies install systems (Native Instruments and SSL respectively). Since I had older installers in both cases I was able to get the ones I use the most installed. #gearsquad#recording#plugins#Studio
Well, got my recent song mixed. Quite a challenge with several stereo tracks, 2 acoustic guitars in high and low tunings, one electric guitar, pipe organ, 3 synth tracks, drums and 2 vocal tracks. It went great. Until I decided today to completely change the instrumentation for the final chorus, which really needed to be done to fit the lyrical story context. Brought in a stereo string section and piano with the Strymon BigSky reverb on Epiphany chorale setting for those tracks. Wow, that did the trick. Fortunately, I preserved all the original mix settings and just had to do a few moderate adjustments. And I’ve listened to the song so many times, I could pick out any issues quite easily. Done. Now just need a freaky bizarre graphic for this strange song. Tomorrow. #music#recording#songwriting
Well, Long & McQuade determined that my Apogee Symphony 32x32 is working just fine. Managed to get it hooked up to my MacBook today, installed the drivers, and sure enough it’s working. So the issue is indeed the Mac Pro. Sadly the MacBook isn’t really powerful enough to handle much of what I work with, but at least it’s a temporary solution. #gearsquad#musicproduction#recording#studio
The sacred ritual of getting ready for vocals. Pulling the large diaphragm condenser mic out of its inner sanctum and hooking it up to the 48v electric life source, the phantom power. #music#recording#vocals#songwriting
Great article that helped me solidify my understanding of why I might want to record at 24/96 at a minimum. 24/48 is the standard for video, but when recording artistic material I might even go 32/192. Storage/processing isn't as much of a concern these days, and even the baby audio interfaces can do that...
Another evening creating some synth pads and figuring out which ones fit for the song I wrote. Tracked a couple and I think they’ll work okay. Changed the song tempo from 100 to 110 bpm for the lyric cadence vibe. Working on bass track next, then rhythm guitar. #music#recording#songwriting
I spent the day in a recording studio in Bremerton. Just got home after a long drive around in crazy weather.
We knocked out seven songs — 3 more than we planned. I feel like a diatonic accordion master right now (I am not one but I got it done today) — totally high on it right now. I also did some guitar work on it. Really, best studio day I’ve ever had. Wahoo!
This band is Cooper Point Road. Next live show is April 20th at The Owl ‘n Thistle. #music #recording #Seattle #Bremerton
New EP. I recorded this in the month of February for the RPM Challenge. I went into it with a plan to work with one method I came up with a while ago, but then realized I could extend another method I've used in the past, so I had to try that a lot. I did a lot more "hand on" editing of waveforms than I usually do (I generally try to get code to do all the work). And it was fun, though my ears are very tired. Really hate tech sometimes. Was listening to a tune I've been working on for the past couple of weeks yesterday & suddenly the speakers cut out. After doing a number tests rearranging cables I've determined that outputs 1 & 2 on the Apogee Symphony are no longer functional. Have to take it in now for a warranty repair, which is likely to take weeks. Really frustrated, & thinking that after all the issues I've had the past year I've chosen the wrong hobby. #gearsquad#musicproduction#recording
