Ok #GearSquad, who has an Apollo interface? What do we think? :blobcatcoffee:

GuitarSith,

@woolie @ambergrey
I’ve used Presonus and Apogee interfaces on Mac, both require drivers. They’re installed as a “universal” app in both cases, so regardless of the interface of theirs that you’re using you install the same app.

Amber, for the price I would recommend getting an Apogee Symphony Desktop interface.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey @woolie
I believe that the Symphony Desktop is on sale right now, but you might need to order it directly from Apogee. If you have a local dealer they might match the price. It’s a really good basic 2 in, 2 out interface.

Feeling discouraged. I have so much work; really good completed songs. They are really good. I believe in them. Getting them out into the world in a presentable form is scary and hard. :BlobhajShock:

Been working on an album for over five years now. Redoing songs two or three times because they’re never quite what I want. And now I’m really lacking motivation, I just don’t have the energy or desire to continue.

Keep going, don’t give up. The snippets I’ve heard are great. I know you can do it.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey
I’m soooooo close too. I have 11 songs mixed and ready for mastering, 5 originals and 6 covers. I have 3 or 4 more originals I really want to get finished, but I’m just struggling to actually get in the studio and finish them. Figure once I have I will pick the 8 or 9 strongest songs and actually create a BandCamp account and release them. I promise that I’ll keep going.

Well, my attempt to switch to being a lefty guitar player isn’t going to work. I just can’t get my fingers to work the right way on the fretboard without them getting in the way of each other. And forget about strumming or picking, that’s a total disaster. So I’m just going to have to keep taking the anti inflammatories and limbering my fingers up as best I can before playing.

@mxtthxw
Yeah, in my left index finger, probably from my hunt and peck typing technique for the final 30 years of my career. A couple months ago it was getting so painful I just couldn’t play. I’m finding that roll on IcyHot along with turmeric curcumin is really helping. Plus warming up my fingers and limbering them before playing. Since I’m mostly recording short bursts seems to be working out okay.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey
I tried using one of my regular guitars flipped for left hand playing, but the chords upside down are even worse. I even tried the Jeff Healey technique with a guitar on my lap. Easier for normal chords but impossible for barre chords. I’ll keep at playing “the right way” and see how I do. The advantage of recording is that there are lots of ways to work around the pain, even if it means working in shorter five minute bursts.

[Quickly does some math in his head] That would mean I’d finally have it down when I’m about 102. Maybe I could really challenge myself and try to have it down before I start my 100th trip around the Sun. 🤣😂🤣

@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

Well, I’m now beyond frustrated with Apple. Was working with Apple Loops in Logic this morning, went to use the search feature, picked a filter and now all the loops are totally gone. I reindexed them, nothing; reinstalled & reindexed them, nothing. Deleted the preference file, rebooted, nothing. Lost all my settings when I deleted the preferences too. So looking like I need to delete anything Logic related for preferences & logs the reinstall Logic. 🤬

@elsemusic
Just confirmed it's a project level issue. I opened a new empty project and all the loops are there. Now I have to figure out what happened to the project that made them all disappear.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@elsemusic
Couldn't see anything in the project settings options at all that looked remotely like it would work. So decided to try importing the project settings from an earlier version of the project and that worked. I'm sure I'm going to find some stuff has messed up, but at least I've got the loops back. 😮‍💨

@ambergrey @elsemusic
I’ve been getting a “Logic didn’t close properly” error for a couple days, again it’s just this project. So I guess something in the project has gotten corrupted somehow. It’s nearly 6Gb now, lots of audio with lots of take lanes. I think I’m just going to export everything and bring it back in a new project. Setting all the plugins and automation again will be tedious, but I’d rather be safe than lose everything down the road.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey @elsemusic
The .logicx file is actually a whole bunch of files packed into a folder that looks like a file. All of the assets that you’ve selected in the advanced settings options are then included in it. You can opt to not use the single file & instead keep all the assets as individual files, but I’ve never done this. If you do it might be easier to find the actual asset that’s corrupted & fix it. I’m actually in the process of rebuilding mine now.

I’m going to talk about it because I think it’s important. Some part of my education or musical programming/upbringing had me in a fixed mindset that being a singer-songwriter, especially one that plays guitar, was a less-than activity. Something to be ashamed of. That if I was to be a “real” musician, I would resume violin, or pursue pedal harp fully, or resume cello. I had to go through a whole mental reprogramming over the past few YEARS to get that (MOSTLY!) out of my head.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey
I think piano players suffer from the same thing. I actually took one piano lesson as a youth and was told I had to hold my fingers in a precise manner and that reading music was critical to being a great player. So I took up guitar instead. And never took a lesson, just worked it out with friends and mentors. I actually started writing on the guitar when I realized that writing was easier than trying to figure other bands songs out off of the LP’s. 😂

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey
I’ve always been able to hear stuff in my head, but getting it out is a completely different challenge. I’ve always felt that we are surrounded by music & artsy stuff, and a few gifted people can see and feel it. And even fewer are able to actually bring it to life and share it, It’s a very special gift. And I’m sure it can be honed and fine tuned.

What are some of your favorite alt guitar tunings?

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey
The Rain Song, Led Zeppelin. It’s a Gsus tuning so thick to thin strings are D G C G C D. I’ve never run across another song that uses this tuning.

Apparently George Harrison complained to Page that Zep never did any really pretty ballads, and cited Something as an example. So to prove that they could do it Page and Plant wrote this song. The opening two chords are actually the opening chords for Something as well, kind of adding insult to injury.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@boxspring @ambergrey
For the recording I believe he used standard tuning. I’ve seen the chord chart for that and it’s absolutely brutal. Even in the Gsus tuning there are a few changes that will stretch your fingers further than you ever thought possible.

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@boxspring @ambergrey
I know that he’s used standard tuning on it at some point, but definitely not live. Pretty sure I read in a Zep book somewhere (maybe When Giants Walked The Earth) that it was in the studio. It’s possible that the acoustic guitar is standard and the electric is Gsus when I listen to it.

Learned the stretch version too, but saw The Police and Summers is using chords. String duplicates that here.

@eyesquash @ambergrey
It's one of my favourite songs too. The initial songbook I was using back in the 70's showed it in standard tuning and I wasn't smart enough then to really think about alternate tunings. I learned it about ten years ago using this tutorial, and it really shows how brilliant Page is at layering parts.

Actually did a cover of Ten Years Gone back in 2017. It was mixed by guy I was collaborating with at the time, Rick McLure and the lead was done by a guy I was working with, Felipe.

Keep going, you’re always going to be improving. It’s also good to keep old projects like this for reference too, because it’s a great way to see how much better you’re getting.

This isn't bad at all Scott. It's not an easy song to play, but to sing at the same time would be beyond me. Good job. 👍

Andy Summers is definitely a very underrated player. And of course totally overshadowed by Sting, as was Stewart Copeland. An amazing trio of musicians that gave so much to us in their very brief time together.

Picked up the lefty Fender Squier Tele this afternoon. This is going to be a lot harder than I had thought. In my mind the fingering was pretty simple. In reality my fingers are in the way. I feel like I'm starting all over again. sigh

GuitarSith,
@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org avatar

@eyesquash
Figure I’ll start with just Emin and A, which is a pretty simple shift and add/subtract. Once I’m more comfortable with those I’ll add a D, which is a fairly significant finger move. All the videos I’ve seen say start with a C, but my fingers/brain just aren’t capable of that shape yet, it’s quite complex and the open G string is just a dull thud right now because I’m struggling to arch my fingers properly.
