I spent hours fiddling around in Propellorheads Rebirth software when it was first released. Had loads of fun but was never really able to get anything that sounded as good as the demo songs that came with it. Oddly enough as much as I love Reason I have the same issue, I just can't seem to generate songs using it.
@flockofnazguls
It's a great product, the rack concept is amazing. I re-purchased it when version 11 was released because they modified it so that it works both as a standalone product and as a plugin instrument. The tools that they provided in it are amazing, and I've used it as a plugin in Logic several times.
@Rasta
It’s going to be a really rough day when Keith goes. Charlie was hard last year too. They’re all getting up there now, and just like taxes it’s inevitable.
@Rasta
Totally understand. I was floored a few years ago when I found out that the lead singer of our high school band had died. Then I found out the last drummer I’d worked with had died too. Both were younger than me, and it made me much more aware of my own mortality.
@Rasta
My mother is 92 and my dad turns 90 in May. Both have slowed down a lot, but still in their own home and not wanting any help. If it’s genetics I’ll be here long past the point where I’m going to run out of money. Reality is anything can happen, so I’m just making the most of my time.
Hey #GearSquad do you all know some good professional music news/publications that would be good to follow to keep a pulse on things? Thanks!! :blobcatcoffee:
@ambergrey
In Apple News I follow Future Music and Computer Music. I’ve followed them for a number of years now, I used to subscribe to the physical magazines, but online makes it much easier.
The first magazine I ever followed was Modern Music & Recording back in the 70’s, but it went under in the mid 80’s. That’s where I first heard about the PortaStudio and was able to order one when they first came out.
Found out this morning that I cannot update Logic Pro to 10.8 unless I'm running at least MacOS Ventura. So I'm saying goodbye to Monterey after years of service and taking the plunge. I think I might loose a few plugins, but c'est la vie.
@elsemusic
Never broke down & purchased Waves plugins. I have Harrison, Line 6, Native Instruments, iZotope, Reason, Celemony, Plugin Alliance & Slate.
Harrison just got bought out by SSL & are in the process of moving to iLok for licensing. Hopefully Native Instruments consolidates iZotope & Plugin Alliance into their licensing scheme soon.
At this point I'm feeling like I have to keep up with the operating system. If plugin makers can't be bothered to stay compatible then I'll drop them.
@Onj
It's all there, 100% which kind of surprises me. I have older Native Instrument plugins (Guitar Rig 5) that I thought would certainly not make it, but it's there.
I'll probably make the move onto Sonoma shortly. I'm beginning to feel like it's important to keep up with the operating system upgrades, and if the plugin manufacturers can't be bothered to stay compatible that's on them.
@woolie@elsemusic
Took a quick look. Arthurian make lots of plugins, but no bundles so it could get very expensive. FabFilter look interesting so I’ll take a closer look.
I try to use a minimum of plugins on a track, but when I do they tend to be pretty specialized. Like Harrison’s Vocal Intensity Processor or 32C Console. And I actually find the plugins built into Logic are pretty good actually.
@Onj
I was really impressed with NI when I first picked up Komplete 9 Ultimate. But since they took over iZotope & Plug-in Alliance it’s just been continuous sales emails to “buy, buy, buy.” I have a Komplete Kontrol S61 MkI keyboard that now obsolete and unsupported. It wasn’t actually what I had hoped it would be, the lights didn’t work in the plug-in, only as a stand-alone. I still really like their virtual synths though, and use them a lot.
Is it normal to love your guitar so much you look at Sweetwater and want to buy all the other ones they have in stock, just in case something happens and you need them….. Nimona is the best! (My Charvel pro mod 24 dinky).
Trying to copy some MIDI parts from one project in Logic to another. For some reason the exported MIDI part contains some additional info that messes up the instruments completely - I get the Massive instrument I want plus a Steinway grand piano at the same time. 🤬
So, figured I'd just open both projects at the same time and then hand paint the MIDI notes into a new track while looking at the old one. What a disaster! Logic becomes a bug riddled unworkable mess. 🤬🤬
@ambergrey
Exported the MIDI track from my original song, created a new project, then imported the MIDI into it. The imported track is a Steinway grand piano by default. I reset the instrument to Massive and selected the instrument patch I wanted, but it’s lost behind the piano. So basically I have to recreate the track from scratch.
When I do covers I try to work from a MIDI template that I export from Guitar Pro, but I’ve never changed the instruments, mainly because it’s just a guide.
@ambergrey
This has actually become a really interesting project. It’s a song I wrote in 1980, then revived with some collaborators I worked with on Twitter in 2017. Because I worked with another lyricist in the 80’s I couldn’t use the original lyrics, and came up with a chorus but not the verses. I’m now determined to re-record it and complete the lyrics. While it started as a song about the pain of a break-up, I’m thinking I should channel my pain about losing Leia and make it about that.
@ambergrey
Thanks Amber. I haven’t been in a great place mentally since I lost Leia. Been trying to work on final mixes of a batch of songs I’ve written and a few covers, but it’s been a bit of a struggle.
Hey #GearSquad I need keyboard controller recs. My studio space can accommodate a 49 key controller. This will mostly be used to record the piano arrangements for my vocals. I may use it alongside an M8 Tracker, a Lemondrop, and other little guy synths. But for the critical purpose, it needs to be a nice playing piano. I’m looking at the NI Komplete Kontrol, the Arturia Keylab 49, and the M Audio Oxygen Pro but if you have other considerations let me know. Idk about these synth style keybeds.
@ambergrey
Native Instruments just released their 3rd generation of the Komplete Kontrol keyboard, the MK1 that I have is now totally obsolete. I think it might definitely be worth looking at.
Question for the #gearsquad and #guitar players: if you couldn’t rely on your fretting hand for vibrato, what guitar and vibrato bridge system would you choose so you could get that expression with a bar? I’d like to play more lead lines in my compositions but fretting hand vibrato and note bending is a path to injury for me. So I’m looking at guitars with effective vibrato bridges and the G & L Dual Fulcrum Vibrato on most of their models looks like a good place to start. 1/

Don't have a lot of photos of it actually, but here's a shot of my Fender family with a lone Gibson.
Originally recorded this tune using my Carparelli S4 & Carparelli 59, but the picked part was too muddy. So I rerecorded the whole thing using the Strat. The picked parts are great, but the chord changes had too much squeaking, so I rerecorded the "power" guitar parts using the Gibson '59. Hope this gives a bit of an idea for how it sounds. I love the guitar, by the way.
@NigelTufnel@ambergrey
Thanks Nigel. I'm finding it far more versatile than my Les Pauls. I think because of the three pickups and the multitude of possible combinations and permutations. Even the muted heavier parts in the verses sounded great, it was just the darn string squeaks and squeals that forced me to redo them using the Les Paul. Another little cheat I added - to really bring out the strings & synth noodles I reinforced them using a Taurus foot pedal option in Massive. What a Rush! 🤣
