Here's an update on my upcoming album The Mechanics of Mysticism, wherein I discuss why it's taken me more than a year, where I'm at and some of what's left before it's finished.

There is a third sampler hidden in the Bitwig Grid. I documented some of my Ideas around it in this video.

If you're involved in electronic music-making and you're not white, please DM me on here.

I've just been watching loads of #SuperBooth footage and was aghast at how overwhelmingly white the whole thing is. I've seen more diversity at EDL marches.

So, I'm gonna try and do something about it. And the first thing is organising.

Does anyone else maintain (s) for their (s)?
I enter all configuration adjustments and (s) in a file for each machine.
This might seem like unnecessary extra work, but has paid off several times for the sake of traceability or in the past. 🤓

44100 Hz or 48000 Hz for ?
Personally I usually go with 48000 Hz because it somehow feels more "natural" to me than 44100 Hz (as half of 96000 Hz or a quarter of 192000 Hz). Made my life easier a few times when I wanted to for too.

I found most of my #WeeklyBeats tracks pretty okay, but this week's submission I really like. And it's not even finished yet. Can't wait for folks to listen to it.

(Note that this is from 15 year old clip originally from XLR8R TV covering a street performance by The Glitch Mob, not from Superbooth. It's famously been sampled by Skrillex in "Rock 'n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)" in 2010.)

I suspect Scandinavia - especially Sweden - is good at pop #musicproduction precisely BECAUSE of its lack of defining characteristics. If the music isn't too weird or complex but the melodic and harmonic core is strong, it'll be palatable to more people.

In the United States, one genre with such a strong core is country music. When American country singers take that strong core and get rid of the fiddles, hats and boots, they often become quite popular.

It's been a while since I took part in the #MusicWeekliesChallenge, and this week's theme looks like a lot of fun!

"Make an action filled track that would fit an action movie, or maybe a game like Mega Man, Metal Slug or Contra. Let's hear some energy! "

Well, here's my attempt.

Going for sort of a Tron/Daft Punk feel here.

The name is a reference to the 1976 text-based adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure.

I've got a couple of good mics now after years of working hard to save the money. I've a modern pair of c414s (sadly Hungarian, not the Austrian ones). I've an Austrian Audio 818. A pair of 040 micro SDCs. Drum sets, Shure 57s etc etc..

...there is a church down the road from me (and probably many others near me) that always sounded cool. Even as an atheist its tempting to email them and ask about hiring it as a recording space, or ask if they have a choir.

For the past couple of weeks I've spent my evenings modding my Behringer RD-3.

It's a fun way to learn some basic

..and to get a cheaper Roland TB-303 ;)

Turned out pretty good and sounds even better!

Mods:

  • Lower cutoff
  • Hollow square
  • Filter overdrive deluxe
  • Rubber mod
  • Softer VCA attack
  • Higher resonance
  • PSU mod
  • Manual accent

I'll write a blog post about the process soon, but for now, here's an image

you can stop FL Studio from adding 30-60 seconds of silence at the end of your exports:

on the export dialog switch "Tail" to "Cut remainder".

make sure you do your own fade out or you'll get a sharp cutoff, as the name implies.

Cherry Audio does it again, out with yet another classic recreation.

"In 1979, the pioneers at ARP Instruments began researching and developing one of the most ambitious synthesizer designs of that time [...] a 16-voice polyphonic marvel, controlled by a microprocessor, with aftertouch and advanced signal routing and modulation."

"Weeklybeats is a 52 week long music project in which artists compose and publicly release 1 song a week for the entire year. Starting January 1st 2024 GMT each participant will have one week to upload one finished composition. Any style of music or selection of instruments are welcomed and encouraged."

Considering taking part in this. Anyone else?

It's week 20 of #WeeklyBeats, and I've produced "Cosine", a chill lofi synth track that feels very ambient-y and a bit mysterious.

I'm not often really satisfied with my WeeklyBeats tracks, but this time I am. I'm enjoying it a lot, actually :) Curious what people think of it.
