1/9 I'm moving this thread on the lack of population growth is Scotland over from the other place. I would appreciate your thoughts. #Scotland#Population#Europe
Humankind struggled to survive during a 100,000 year period during the early Pleistocene, according to researchers who used a computer model to discover a severe population bottleneck in our species’ ancient past....
What an idiotic, #Mathusian loser. There are more people on #Earth that at any point in history, yet this clown thinks we're in a #population crisis, and the #human race is on the verge of #extinction. #derp
Here's a graph of the growth in human population globally over the past 2024 years. I updated it this morning for a first-year lecture. On it I mark the years my grandparents and parents were born, when I was born, and when my teenage daughter was born.
I still find it hard to grasp just how quickly and massively the human population has exploded. There's 6 billion(!!!) more people on the planet today than when my grandparents were born.
"Uncertainty about the future and concerns about the ecological impact of the growing human #population were key factors also identified by research.
But concerns also differed in different parts of the world, Dillarstone said. “There was a concern that came out only in Zambia and Ethiopia, which was about a family’s ability to subsist and acquire resources,” she said."
If you see anyone parroting the talking points of a certain tech billionaire, maybe get them to watch this video
(which includes thoughtful commentary from the brilliant Jennifer Sciubba): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_mOHelAH44
PS
It might also be useful for anyone who's teaching on population topics.
When we talk to folks about our population goal and the ongoing global trend toward smaller families, people often wonder if having conversations about this is even necessary.
If parental choice is resulting in a slowing of growth and, eventually an easing of our numbers, then we don’t really need to do anything.
But then we point out that some capitalists (like Elon Musk) and a few national governments are already expressing concern about this trend and looking for ways to reverse it.
If we all understand that a smaller, stable human population is a necessary part of a sustainable civilization, then perhaps we can short-circuit any counterproductive interventions.
Good Morning #Canada
Immigration policy is daily news but we should recognize that Canada is a big empty country. (Insert echo)
Sure 90% of us live within 100 miles of the U.S. border, and all levels of government currently suck at building housing. But we rank low in population density with each square kilometer having approximately 4 people.
Compared with:
Russia: 9/km²
USA: 36/km²
China: 146/km²
India: 412/km²
Interesting piece. Judging from these figures, you'd assume that by the end of the century Australia will be welcoming a lot more migrants from Africa, in order to bolster the working-age population.
The planet's population will get to 10.4 billion – then drop. Here’s when we reach peak human
Can't say I subscribe to any great panic over this. Endless growth capitalism is destroying the planet. It'll be challenging coming up with another economic model, but we can do it.
"By the end of this century, the research predicts just six nations – half of which are in sub-Saharan Africa – will have a fertility level above the replacement rate."
Migration is not Australia’s biggest population problem - declining birth rates and rising death rates are
The EU's working-age population declines by around a million every year
3.5 million migrants arrive lawfully every year - around 300,000 enter irregularly
"That means that legal migration should grow more or less with one million per year and that is really a challenge to do that in an orderly way", says Ylva Johansson
#ElonMusk, in an interview commenting on his 11 children, noted that society’s biggest threat is, as he described it, “Population Collapse”. This seems to be a mantra of Silicon Valley tech bros & gurus, including a lot of bloggers and podcasters - it’s like the holy grail - and it is so backasswards wrong on all levels that it is simply stunning anyone believes this. I know the economics involved, but in the age of robotization and automation, this is simply BS. These idiots (who all consider themselves geniuses entitled to lead the way) NEED to maintain the status quo at all costs for their models to work and their billions to be protected; when what the planet and the human race needs is downsizing, less resource extraction, less travel, reduced emissions and fossil fuel use, less globalization and more local ecosystem development. It’d be a short-term burden for some, but #PopulationCollapse would save the planet and the human race in the long run. #Population#PopulationTrends#Demographics#Extinction
I urge you to re-list the West Indian manatee subpopulations, including the #Florida manatee, as endangered. One-fifth of Florida manatees died in the last two years alone. Their #population can’t sustain such heavy losses.
#Pollution in the water has created massive algal blooms which block the sun from reaching the sea floor, killing the #seagrass
Depopulation is one of the most pressing existential threats to our civilization.
With current trends, our planet will soon become a global granny state.
"Why is there no doctors or scientists or educated #people in #gaza?" Because #Israel is killing them all. The majority of the #population in gaza are under 18, Israel kills them before they get to college, and also kills the ones who do.
One interesting Taiwan population trend is that Taiwan now has 587,000 indigenous Austronesian citizens. 30 years ago there were only 310,000 indigenous Taiwanese. The rate of increase has slowed considerably in recent years though. These figures do not count the estimated 900,000 plains indigenous people. At least several hundred thousand of these will soon obtain indigeous status due to a recent Constitutional Court decision.
Canada setting a blistering population growth of 3.2% in 2023! The most since the 1950s! Back then the baby boom was still a thing. Today, there were only 40,000 more births than deaths, 97.6% of the growth came from immigration. Over 471,000 people settled here, 800,000 came as temporary workers and others came as international students, asylum seekers, etc. Our population is 40.7 Million. #CanPoli#Immigration#Population#CdnPoli https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/population-growth-canada-2023-1.7157233
