AspenProposal

@AspenProposal@universeodon.com

"Aspen" is an acronym for "Attempting to See Past the Ends of our Noses". A small group of folks in the mountains of British Columbia have written a brief description of the necessary elements of a sustainable civilization. We are using it to promote conversations and thought about the long-term, in order to accelerate a paradigm shift.

AspenProposal, to science

When we talk to folks about our population goal and the ongoing global trend toward smaller families, people often wonder if having conversations about this is even necessary.

If parental choice is resulting in a slowing of growth and, eventually an easing of our numbers, then we don’t really need to do anything.

But then we point out that some capitalists (like Elon Musk) and a few national governments are already expressing concern about this trend and looking for ways to reverse it.

If we all understand that a smaller, stable human population is a necessary part of a sustainable civilization, then perhaps we can short-circuit any counterproductive interventions.

AspenProposal,

@2du Yes we recognize the challenges we face with this demographic transition. We don't think the answer lies in stimulating birth rates or massively increasing immigration, as Canada has done.
If there are fewer workers and more retirees, then the focus should be on increasing productivity. It may be fortuitous that LLM's and other forms of automation are arriving. But that will only work for society as a whole if governments stiffen their spines and ensure that the benefits of that increased productivity are shared broadly.

AspenProposal, to sustainability

We don’t mind caveats.

Our goal is not to convince people that the Aspen Proposal is the best description of a sustainable future; our goal is to get people thinking and talking about the long-term future of our civilization.

The Aspen Proposal is the tool we use to get the conversations started.

You may not agree with every point it makes or you might be concerned it is missing some points.

Whatever caveats you attach to the Proposal when you share it with others are just fine with us.

The important thing is to get people thinking.

A fellow Canadian recently suggested that American exceptionalism was a problem for the world.

But the real problem for the world is human exceptionalism.

We keep forgetting about the rest of the family.

When you think, do you have an internal dialogue that includes words?

Boost if you're interested.

AspenProposal,

@timbray I'd be really interested in learning more about the 8% and how they think.

AspenProposal, to politics

The biggest problem we face right now is not climate change or AI or intrusive government or biodiversity loss.

Our biggest problem right now is polarization - our inability to have meaningful conversations across political/tribal divides.

We think the Aspen Proposal is distant enough and general enough to provide a useful starting point for those conversations.

Please feel free to use it for that purpose.

AspenProposal, to politics

There is something very powerful about a perspective that views all living things as members of our family.

Perhaps our awareness of our own flaws makes it acceptable to us to ignore the suffering of other humans, but it is not so easy to ignore the suffering of other creatures.

They did nothing to deserve what we are doing to them and their habitats.

Making the future of humanity not just about humans, but about the rest of our family, may well be the key to achieving some real long-term progress.

If we want human civilization to persist for the long term (as the Aspen Proposal suggests) we need to start playing to our strengths.

Compassion, cooperativeness and curiosity along with our ability to experience awe and wonder help define what it is to be human.

And then there’s our ridiculous sense of humour…

Navigating our way through the bottleneck of this century will require faith and focus on the better aspects of our nature, not the worst.

The rest of our family is counting on us.
