"Epidemiologist Mulu Woldegiorgis said the findings show the Omicron variant puts patients at greater risk of developing long COVID than previously thought."
In a recent coast-to-coast test, millions of men and women caught omicron. Each week, during the entire test period, amateur epidemiologists carefully dissected anecdotes and incomplete data sets to draw specious conclusions. As hundreds of thousands remained hospitalized and infected with omicron, the experts all agreed: "There’s never been a better time to get Covid. Omicron is the mildest!"
According to a Nationwide survey: More doctors recommend Omicron than any other variant.

"New, highly mutated COVID variant BA.2.86—close ancestor of globally dominant “Pirola” JN.1—may lead to more severe disease than other Omicron variants, according to 2 new studies published Monday in the journal Cell"
-Italian hospitals collapse
-US in second-highest-ever surge: Pirola doubles in 1 week; hospitalizations rising, “outpacing flu”; hospital masking back in 6 states
-UK levels expected to “break UK record”
-Hong Kong: Omicron “uncontrollable” in 2022 because 1/3 were asymptomatic
-Child risk factors include being between 5–11 and coinfections
“By wastewater levels, #JN1 is now associated with the second-biggest wave of infections in the United States in the pandemic, after #Omicron. We have lost the ability to track the actual number of infections since most people either test at home or don’t even test at all, but the very high wastewater levels of the virus indicate about 2 million Americans are getting infected each day.” #COVIDisNotOver#COVIDhttps://mstdn.social/@erictopol/111698225140794627
The Omicron subvariant JN.1 has surged to dominate COVID-19 cases in the US, jumping from just 7.5% a few weeks ago to nearly half of all infections. | AARP
Still behind with #TWiVTLDR but I need to knit a Christmas gift and I think this is good background noise for that, so I may be catching up soon! 🤞🏻 This Week in Virology from November 9: https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-1060/
Dr. Griffin says we’re still seeing about 200 deaths a day from #COVID, and hospitalizations are starting to tick up.
Looking at #COVID hospitalizations in Hong Kong over 2 years (6 epidemic waves) shows #omicron is “comparable” in severity to the ancestral strain in unvaccinated, uninfected population. (Omicron is actually a little more severe than ancestral, the figure shows, but it's not statistically significant.) Any perceived change in severity is due to the population being vaccinated. “The virus hasn’t gotten milder. #Vaccines work!”
how about talking about how it damages #tcells instead of dated info from some immunology book back from when you were in Med school🙄
it👏🏼is👏🏼called👏🏼a👏🏼novel👏🏼virus👏🏼… for a reason!!!
also reasoning of not vaccinating #xbb for those under 65 to lessen burden on #nhs … 😶…😶😶😶😶😶🤯
Do these people hear themselves?🤦🏻♀️
I’m not dumb, ditzy on occasion but I get things eventually, however I read & see things constantly that are making me second guess myself; maddening
Prof Openshaw said: "The #viruses circulating now are pretty distant immunologically from the original #virus which was used to make the early #vaccines, or which last infected them.
"A lot of people have very little immunity to the #Omicron viruses and their #variants ."
WTF #misinformation is this?!?!
THERE IS NO NOR HAS THERE EVER BEEN DURABLE IMMUNITY TO A VIRUS THAT HAS MUTATED MORE IN 3 YEARS THAN FLU IN 15+++++ YEARS even if you were just infected
Although just published today, this is from Feb-March 2021, 7 months before the very first #omicron that was more infectious & 12-16 months prior to super infectious BA.5
So… my guess is, one can get enough infectious dose with 1-2 inhales. We are truly down to mere seconds #viralDose
& nearly nobody cares
Yeah, I’m not waiting for science studies for confirmation of what I’ve already known for years now
@DenisCOVIDinfoguy@auscovid19 when are they going to stop calling everything fkin #omicron? close to, what, two years now? Enough already. put some thought into it for God's sake man! Got lots of Greek letters left. Fking nitwits, the @who are
#IDMastodon#COVIDisAirborne#CovidIsNotOver#CaseReport The intrauterine transmission of #COVID19 is certain. Moreover, the intrauterine transmission of #COVID19 may cause abnormalities in various organs of the fetus. Given the potential risks of #COVID19 to the fetus, especially #obstetricians, must pay sufficient attention to this issue, & pregnant women should take extra precautions to protect themselves & their unborn children
If #COVID variants just evolved, that would be fine.
The problem is that at some point, I would say since the appearance of #omicron, the evolution of #SARSCoV2 has accelerated dangerously.
Dangerous in the sense that a highly pathogenic and still highly transmissible variant is likely to emerge during this pandemic. In this case, a variant only has to remain calm for a few days before transmission and then doing damages.
This can happen very, very quickly.
How would that be possible?
By hacking the immune system. Especially in a context where variant do not compete (we are not here yet).
#COVID19 the third-leading cause of death in #Australia in 2022, data shows - ABC News https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-27/covid-in-abs-leading-causes-of-death-data-heart-disease-/102906350 “COVID-19 entered the top five in 2022, with most deaths occurring during the #Omicron wave
It's the first time an InfectiousDisease has been a leading cause of death in more than 50 years
The virus was responsible for more than one in 20 deaths in 2022, making it the third-leading cause of death behind coronary heart disease and dementia.”
Orrr.... 🙄
"In summary, we found that BA.2.86 is antigenically distinct from XBB.1.5 and previous #Omicron variants, and can evade XBB-induced and XBB-effective neutralising antibodies targeting various epitopes. "
