Asking this again to see if I can get more ideas: What are your favorite examples of typographically interesting/playful British fiction? I've got Tristram Shandy, B.S. Johnson, and Rawle's Women's World (and of course Joyce!), but it turns out I'm surprisingly more familiar with American examples. What other British novels play around with graphic design and visual format? #novels#academicchatter
In the internment camps we learned valuable skills! Like how not to get shot for trying to escape, when we just running to use the public latrine on a freezing cold night.
@georgetakei
Mr. Takei, have you read Jay Rubin's novel, The Sun Gods?
Harvard (emeritus) translator of Murakami Haruki's novels & short stories. It's written from the perspective of a white young man, but it deals with the internment in a very moving way.
I heard him read from it 12 years ago, or so, at Seattle's University Bookstore, the city where most of the novel is set & where I grew up. Many Issei & Nisei were interned from there.

Here is a list of favourite fiction writers and story tellers:
Jane Austen (the Master); James Joyce; Virginia Woolf; Stella Gibbons; Muriel Spark; Italo Calvino; Franz Kafka; Kazuo Ishiguro; Joseph Conrad; Angela Carter.
And in the comics medium: Alan Moore; Neil Gaiman; Posy Simmonds.
If you are also a fan of any of these, I would be delighted to chat with you about them in the comments.
I would also like to hear of any writers similar to the ones I list who I should try.
a mash-up of a #Gothic thriller and #ColdWar thriller, that some say contains a secret code that reveals how UFOs are used to increase horse sense. Everything will be revealed after The Four Horsemen have a hit on TikTok.
Hi fellow book nerds! I'm trying to put together a Utopian Book Club (focused on novels and novellas). I want to include LeGuin's The Dispossessed and @pluralistic 's Walkaway, but from there I've got an endless list of mostly white dudes.
What cool utopian fiction by BIPOC writers have I missed out on?
Gums by Poe:
The Masque of the Red Death - great for parties, it will spread like a plague
The Cask of Amontillado - well aged, packaged to look like small bricks in a wall
Nevermore - the last gum you will need
On our recent trip to Japan, I ran out of novels to read, so I went to a bookstore in Naha, the capital of Okinawa, which had an English language section.
I recommend this debut novel by Deborah Install, A Robot In The Garden.
It's sweet (some may say naive, but that's more the robot than the author), & a dark underbelly emerges later on.
Themes: divorce, meaning of family, AI/human interaction, parenting, world travel, mystery.
It's so good, y'all!

The Gum flavours that last a long time. Note: Many have trouble finishing a pack of either of these gums.
War and Peace
Finnegans Wake * a lot of disagreement on the flavour
The best #StarWars#novels I've read are by #JamesLuceno, particularly #DarthPlagueis, which should be at the top of any fan's reading list, detailing decades of galactic history leading up to #TPM, from about 65 BBY.
Note that Plagueis is not canon. Some of Luceno's later novels are, including #Tarkin and #Catalyst. Catalyst in particular is notable for being hundreds of pages of #Krennic manipulating pacifist #GalenErso into his work on the #DeathStar.
If you want to find official #StarWars authors, artists and other persons of interests for #reading folks of #canon and #StarWarsLegends#novels and #comics here on Mastodon, check our "following" list. There aren't terribly many, but more than you might realise. Also, if we missed any accounts, feel free to point them out to us.
Operation Butterfly and Operation Liberty are books eleven and twelve in my Eve’s War Heroines of SOE series. The books, which bring the series to a close, will be released this summer and autumn. I’m delighted to say that both books are currently in the top ten of Amazon’s Hot New Releases 🙂
