I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like #Obsidian that are using open formats like #Markdown for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.
I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.
Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.
Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇
-] Tasks “manager”: tried Obsidian, One Note, Google Keep, Notebook… I can’t seem to find The One that works for me (and syncs with my laptop & phone). Taking suggestions!
-] Something to read and annotate pdfs: I got a Remarkable2 tablet, and then an Onyx Boox Note Air 2, and they’re just too slow and do not easily sync with my laptop and Zotero. For the most important papers I have to say I might prefer paper.. Also taking suggestions for this.
Edit: trying to make the bullet points not disappear in #IceCubes is still hard
I'm also using (a very simplified version of) the #bulletJournal as todo list/task manager. I also use the same paper notebook to take notes, so it's all in one place. Easy to synconise, a bit more complicated to search 😅
Not sure if there are any spots left, but Microsoft Loop for #iOS is very accessible. I think there are a few issues that can be worked out in beta, but it is really nice, and a good replacement for #Notion
Threat actors have been abusing legitimate internet services (LIS) like #Mockbin, #GitHub, #Notion, and many others for years in highly innovative ways. I am excited to be presenting at the Australian Information Security Association’s #CyberCon in Melbourne next week together with Ben Archie from Recorded Future where we will be speaking about the current state of LIS abuse, specific techniques used, and what defenders can do about it.
I bashed Notion without ever trying it. Now I’ve tried it (for one day).
I can see how it could appeal to people. I’m not sure what came first but there’s some similarities to other apps I have used.
The calendar integration Notion Calendar (Cron) is particularly good.
I've run into a real problem: content in various projects is swapping places (and sometimes disappearing) as I'm using it. Previous versions don't have it right.
I made my first #Notion template - it's for freelancers.
The freelancer's Notion hub is a simple to use out of the box but fully customisable Notion template specifically for freelancers – based on the requests of real freelancers and put together by and for #neurodivergent brains (but useful for everyone).
I'm selling a festive planning Notion template which focuses on also providing sustainable alternatives and ideas to make it a little easier for newer folks to have a more sustainable festive season.
Today's gamedev protip from someone totally unqualified to be giving such things is this:
Kanban boards and task lists are all well and good, but leaving a very specific next step for your future self at the end of each session makes it a lot quicker to get started next time.
If you are trying to transition from #Notion to #Obsidian or any other Markdown-powered notes system, you'll find that the MD files that Notion exports are... underwhelming.
I wrote a shell script that quickly and easily fixes the major pain points, and will get the exported files all ready to go.
Geeky action du jour: importing #TheRealists blog posts into a #Notion database — so that I can potentially get interesting insights thanks to its new Q&A feature 👩🏻💻
(inspired by @crumbler and his brilliant use of Notion)
