if following a #hashtag I think the hashtag followed should be prominent when you see a post with it in your feed -- this instantly answers: "why am I seeing this?"

If you want your posts to be visible, use hashtags. This is more important here than anywhere else, because there is no cross-instance full-text search. And people do follow hashtags.
In my experience well-hashtagged posts get half of their interactions from people who don't follow me.

Overall, I'm usually either working on some new personal #OpenSource project, studying some newly-released technology, or playing video games 🙂📺
I work from home, so my days are a bit bland. I want to connect with like-minded people here on #mastodon and hopefully make new friends with similar interests, as they are hard to find around here (I'm from #bucharest, #romania).
I'm still thinking about how mastodon should be a hot bed of developer a activity trying to improve the platform. But it's not. Partly because of a small minority of users who flame anyone who tries to do anything. And partly because control of the core was captured by a small, insular group of people who don't know how to foster collaborative growth. So much potential being wasted.
That sounds very miss-informed. Mastodon has very good reasons for #Hashtag only search being default.
Full-Text search is new and opt-in only. (The User decides if he wants to be found easily) as it should be.
If you don't like that philosophy - there's tons of other fedi software out there that works completely different.
#Mastodon maybe is the most successful one exactly because it does not buckle to every demand to mimic corporate social media but stays true to its principles.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you who use AltText to add descriptions to your pics and media. As someone who used to be able to see but has been blind for over 30 years now, it allows me to see the pic in my mind and is greatly appreciated and allows me to enjoy them.
Another heartfelt thanks to those who use #CamelBack in their hashtags. This makes it so much easier to understand with a screen reader and for those who read print as well! ❤️
I do it all the time, but make one slightly amendment to #UpperCamelCase (#PascalCase:)
When a #Hashtag includes an abbreviations, such as "US," I continue with a small letter e.g. in #USpol as #USPol makes you wonder if the tag isn't about USPs (Unique Selling Propositions.)--
Does this work for you, too?
