Pheeew. Made it on Sunday with a last run from Galashiels, up to Maigle Hill, Torwodlee Broch and return. The Broch is one of three in the Borders and is overlooked by one at last weekends run.
A gorgeous day and a stiff run 480 metres of climbing and steep with it. Slowest run of the month. 2 hrs 5 mins.
A fundraiser with two colleagues (one cycling, one swimming) for the Borders Food Banks.
We drew lots to swim 1k open water, run 1 half marathon a day, and cycle 50 miles every day for March, to raise funds for Borders food banks.
I hate food banks, an indictment of the callous barstewards in Westminster who can not even be excused of knowing the cost of everything. Funds matched by our company (we are employee owned) and as of last night a total of £41000 and a few pennies).
Boris Johnson to make a general election comeback for the Tories
An interesting experiment I suppose. Can many Tory voters, after Covid, the Economy, Brexit, Healthcare and other pettier larcenies, be fooled yet again?
@Andy_European
When I ran a foodbank (pre 2017), DWP REFUSED to give out foodbank vouchers. But they still "sent" people to us, so we had to organise a voucher for them. So now DWP regress to callous cynical position of knowing help is needed, rejecting foodbank stats on food poverty, yet still sending people to f/bank but without the proper referral vouchers (then gov have the cheek to say people cheat the system).
Never trust the DWP. #DWP #FoodPoverty #FoodInsecurity #Foodbanks
For many #desi#newcomers settling in #Canada, the transition isn’t as intimidating as it used to be. Thanks to YouTube & Instagram influencers, they arrive armed with info, from scoring a free phone to accessing free groceries at charity food banks & more.
In recent weeks, several international students lining up for free groceries have received notices from their colleges stating that these #FoodBanks are intended for the most vulnerable in society
I feel like I committed a crime: had so many tomatoes on the table, can't eat or give away fast enough, can't go to food bank today, can't make sauce today, more on the way tomorrow, and the fruit flies were too numerous so I (shutters to think about this) bagged them and put into the fridge. #gardening#tomatoes#gyo#GrowFoodFromSeed#GiveFoodToOthers#DonateFood#FoodBanks
The Brussels region in Belgium wants to introduce legal obligations for large supermarkets to donate unsold food.
Eurostat estimates that roughly 10% of all the food made available to EU consumers ends up in the trash. In 2020, that amounted to nearly 59 million tons, according to the EU.
It is not the first time an EU country introduces legislation on food donations. Does it work?
OK, I know it's early to call "which MP has said the most blatantly disgusting thing today" but Johnny Mercer on Sky this morning claims "people using food banks is a lifestyle choice and part of their budgetting measures".
If your household budget does not stretch as far as BEING ABLE TO FEED YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY, that is NOT a choice. 🤬 #Foodbanks#CostOfLivingCrisis#ToryBastards#UKPolitics
Geneviève’s eye opening account of working at a foodbank. It’s “firefighting without addressing the causes of the fire, and that ultimately the answer to poverty is political.” #poverty#foodbanks#Bylines
A lad I work with built a thing called Donation Genie—a website that displays the items that are most needed at each specific food bank across the UK.
The BBC have very kindly done a nice write-up about what it is, why it’s needed, and what it hopes to achieve. If you are in the UK, please boost this to help get the link to those who need it.
#KingCharles calls 4 '#Volunteering''. There is an incongruity here, a multi billionaire born with a silver spoon calling upon a population where #foodbanks are normal, child poverty is rife, to 'help out'. Many do volunteer out of selflessness, does that include you Charles? @RepublicStaff#fraternity
Our growing dependence on #foodbanks to deal with people in food poverty is a national disgrace - the poor & vulnerable should not need to be dependent on voluntary provision to survive.
The food banks do great work (as do their doors & volunteers), but they should not be needed at all in a civilised modern #democracy. that they are tells you what you need to know about how the #Tories have systematically destroyed the safety net for the poor.
#Introduction I’m now #retired, after a career in accounting & IT mostly at HP (& then Agilent). After that, I spent 17 years as a professional organizer, helping people with their #clutter; I was also the #editor of a local magazine.
