Lawmakers Ignored Warnings About New York’s Broken Guardianship System for Decades. Here’s How They Can Fix It.
From public funding for guardians to more scrutiny of #nonprofit providers, experts say policymakers could take several actions to bolster the state’s foundering system for caring for its most vulnerable.
#NewYork Trusted This Company to Care for the #Sick and #Elderly. Instead, It Left People Confused and Alone.
Unchanged diapers. Fees collected for care never given. New York Guardianship Services is often tasked with caring for the "unbefriended," but records show more than a dozen cases where it failed to meet the needs of the most vulnerable.
I'm trying to sign up for men's #cooking#lessons here in #Japan to placate my busy #Japanese wife. While she was away, I made this cheese omelette; beginner's luck! A #community center has me on a waiting list, or I could spill for more upscale lessons. It is astonishing and unJapanese that single-person #households are approaching 40%. #Single#men of all ages have a poor #diet, which exacerbates the #lifespan gap with #women. #Loneliness is also a #health hazard. Many men are #widowed, never #married, or their #wives#divorce them, often after the children become independent and the husband is useless around the house after a busy career. Single men, or married men interested in cooking or helping their wives, possibly fearing their wives' pent-up anger, can find #companionship as well as #survival#skills in cooking lessons. Men's classes start from zero; women #cook and #socialize.
Can we please get one thing straight?
There is no such thing as #PostCovid!
What you mean is post lockdown. Saying Post COVID dangerously suggests that people are safe from the ongoing pandemic - and yes, it is an ongoing pandemic - no matter how much you want it not to be.
People are still dying and becoming permanently disabled. The pandemic continues to present a very real risk to people - to all people, but especially to our disabled, elderly, and Indigenous communities.
I can't believe I still have to say this, but Mask Up and if you are unwell, stay the hell at home!
"Using sea-level rise models and migration data gleaned from the latest U.S. Census, the paper projects that outmigration from coastal areas could increase the median age in those places by as much as 10 years over the course of this century. That’s almost as much as the difference between the median age in the United States and the median age in Japan, which is among the world’s most elderly countries."

With the good tax news that my assessment for tax purposes fell by 2.2%, comes bad condo association news. On top of the current 7-year Special Assessment, we will have a 1-year Special Assessment to cover expenses to repave the parking lot. My part is $45/mo for 12 months! I am one very, very unhappy condo owner. It is very hard to do long range planning with stuff like this. That lops off another $50/mo from my available spending on top of the previous Special Assessment and the Medicare costs that started last May. #Condo#CondoLiving#Elderly#Retirement
This could have so easily happened to my dad. He insisted on staying in his house for just a bit longer than was actually safe for him given his mobility issues. When his home health aide called my brother and I about him having a possible fall, we immediately went down and had him assessed. We then realized that he needed more help than he could get at home. I was so afraid that something like this would happen (gift article): https://wapo.st/3QKaUKS
"SINGAPORE – At an ageing block of rental flats in Queenstown, Aiden the robot works as a “butler”. Somewhat resembling a photocopier machine, it has been roped in to deliver meals to a group of frail seniors living in rental flats, under an existing programme that allows them to live independently."
Insurance companies and middle men are not paying us for our work. They fine us for every mistake we make or put us through so much hell we don't bother fighting back. And yet we love millionaires because they worked hard for their money. None of us will ever be one. The vast majority of Americans retire in poverty and die in poverty. #poverty#elderly#oldage#millionaires
