I think this is a band-winged dragonlet (Erythrodiplax umbrata), perched on the tip of one of our obedience plants in the front garden yesterday evening.
I had a feeling that I’d see my first #dragonfly of the year today & I was right 🙂
A new species for me too – a male hairy hawker (Brachytron pratense) sunbathing in the grass 😻
Initially similar to other hawkers, like the migrant (Aeshna mixta) which I see a lot of, the hairy hawker flies much earlier in the year & is, well, hairy 🤷♂️🙂
Anyone know what the pink blob is under the anal appendages?

Redis changed to dual license. I'm migrating to Dragonfly! Even if I'm not personally hit by this, it's not longer truly open-source, so I exit Redis. Moreover, Dragonfly is also much more performant.
This dragonfly was busy moulting or being dead or something. It ignored me completely. The intricacies of the pattern on its abdomen are awe-inspiring.
It came to my attention yesterday that #photoJanuary2024 is going on & I totally missed it in the chaos of the new year. So I'm joining in for day 8 which has a theme of "Shot in 2022".
I picked this one because
I really like the dragonfly, and
it still makes me laugh that I thought it had some weird & wonderful stripy proboscis but what I was actually looking at was a wasp's bum as wasp was devoured.
