Then I found out that different programs have different places where they store this information.
Some use the image's embedded data (EXIF etc.).
👍 You can move the file around and the information doesn't get lost.
👎 Not all image/media types support this option
👎 The file itself gets modified, so also the timestamp
I've gone through this same mental exercise. I don't think at the time linux extended attributes were as mature, or I wasn't aware of them.
But what if I want my files on a thumb-drive - with no attributes. Or on Amazon photos (where they don't even export correct file dates!) And are Linux attributes compatible with Windows attributes?
So, for the moment. I'm using #Digikam which is mult-platform. It does mean that you can only move files with the same tool, but ...
I am very satisfied that I last year changed to digiKam to manage my photos.
Not only that it is a free and open source software (donations are welcome from us users) and available on "all" platforms (Linux, Windows and macOS). It is also a very competent software!
This image is a composite taken during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on the 13.08.2023 at a remote location near Göhrde in Germany. It consists of 14 photographs of the Milky Way stacked with #Sequator. 3 additional photographs of the same scene captured meteorites that I added with #GIMP to the final Milky Way image. The single image processing was conducted in #darktable .

The Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel beautifully demonstrates the formation of coastal dunes. From the flat plane of the beach to large and completely overgrown dunes further inland and everything in between.
Thank you all for your likes, boosts and comments. I really appreciate each and every one of you! And thanks to all of you who contribute to any #FOSS projects. Without tools like #digikam, #darktable, #RawTherapee, #GIMP and of course #pixelfed my #photography workflow would not be possible.
I got up very early to photograph the sunrise from the local mountain top (Glander, 1883 m). It was a hard hike up in the dark to get there in time. Unfortunately it was very hazy and the sunrise was behind clouds, but the view was still worth it.
Living high in the Eurasian mountains, the snowfinch is a larger relative of the sparrow. It is quite fearless and can be found around huts and lodges, scavenging for leftovers.
A deer and its fawn crossing a path.
I used two consecutive shots here (taken ~0.1 seconds apart), as I preferred the pose of the fawn in the second shot.
Well knock me down with a feather it actually works. Had this old Sony digikam for years after our former neighbour threw it away (just stopped them binning it) but it uses Sony's proprietory Memory stick duo so bough a cheap adaptor (£2.60) so it could use (x2) micro Sd's.
Had no charger with this cam & only last week realised that my old Sony HX10v uses the same battery (duh) so I could charge the battery after all. How many years did it take to realise this? #digicam#digikam#photography
This hare almost bumped into me. It hobbled along the path daydreaming, or whatever hares do when they hobble around, and only noticed me when it was only a few meters away. It stopped abruptly and eyed me for a second, probably wondering how I had materialized right in front of it. It quickly made up its mind and ran away the way it had come.
I heard and then followed a busy long-tailed tit, hoping for a photo. I was not disappointed as it lead me to its 9 chicks sitting on a branch.
While the nesting attempts of these tits often fail, they either try again or help relatives with their nesting attempt. This additional family help can lead to up to 12 surviving juveniles.
> Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop
We need #FLOSS tools to get to the point where they can replace Adobe tools. Open alternatives are great, but they are sadly not there yet to replace Adobe tools for professionals.
And won't be unless projects like @inkscape get enough funding to develop to a point of being viable alternatives.
@rysiek
I'm a non-pro.
Last year I migrated my photo catalog from Adobe Photoshop Elements, via Lightroom classic to get more metadata (in particulare face tagging) migrated, over to digiKam. For that purpose, FOSS #digiKam works well. I also try it for editing. In addition, I have started to explore and use FOSS #RawTherapee for editing and will likely add FOSS #GIMP (I have used it now and then). A few times FOSS #Inkscape. I still use non-FOSS AfterShot but will likely end that.
I am just a simple man trying to make my way in the fediverse. I am a big #StarWars fan. I converted to the #Linux side, currently using #GarudaLinux and #KDE. I am a proponent of #FOSS. I am a graphic & web designer in SoCal. I hail from the #GooglePlus system (where I was a Google+ Creator and the "Star Wars guy" there...) . I've been a social media nomad since after the Empire destroyed it back in 2018. RIP :(
I'm also a #StarWars fan and I've been using #Linux since the 90s. I tinker with #Inkscape, #gimp, #digikam, and #darktable for my photo and graphics needs. I jumped on #GooglePlus from Day 1, where I had a nice little community that I learned a lot from.
Have you checked to make sure we're not the same person? 😆
