It may seem like a technical detail, but the definition of "use" on Bureau of Land Management land (250 million acres in the Western US) is a big, big deal for species conservation, climate, water, and more. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and the Biden Administration essentially want to make conservation a "use", something Congressional Republicans are going to fight tooth and nail, claiming it threatens cattle ranchers.
Researchers say the Indochinese leopard is functionally extinct in Cambodia after a 2021 camera-trap survey failed to capture a single individual from what was once thought to be the country’s last viable population of the big cat.
The study points to hunting as the most significant contributor to the decline of the subspecies.
Since there is a lot of confusion about bees, and the saving thereof, a thread:
Honey Bees are a Eurasian/African species not native to the Americas but used here for agriculture. Their well-being is no more a conservation concern in the Americas than that of house cats or chickens.
Honey bees are having some problems, though, especially with high winter colony losses. Commercial beekeepers are slower to build colony numbers in the spring, which raises early-spring hive rental prices...
But when we say "save the bees!" we are referring mostly to these many hundreds of native bees that are declining. Not honey bees, which are fine and still outnumber pretty much all the other bees now, in spite of elevated winter losses some years.
Increasing the reach of biodiversity conservation requires addressing the material needs of individuals and communities in and around #protected areas. This analysis provides a comprehensive global projection for a conservation #BasicIncome
Brazil could face losses of $317 billion per year as well as biodiversity depletion and severe social setbacks for millions of people if Amazon deforestation continues, a new report from the World Bank warns.
The value is seven times higher than profits from commodities taken from the rainforest, the report concludes.
Here’s one of my prints, one of a series of related prints about leaf cutter bees, each unique. These prints are both about, and a sort of collaboration with leaf cutter bees! These small, but multifarious native bees are important pollinators, who make nests for their babies using small telltale half-moon pieces they cut from leaves and petals.
Nepal has been lauded for its success in nearly tripling its wild tiger population in the past 12 years, but a consequence of that has been an increase in human-tiger conflicts.
One factor for this is the lack of large-sized prey for the big cats in Bardiya National Park, home to a third of Nepal’s 355 tigers.
Creating liquid biofuels from human waste shows promise as a way to meet one of alternative energy’s greatest challenges: reducing the transportation sector’s heavy carbon footprint. The good news is there is a steady supply stream where waste is treated. Humanity produces millions of tons of sewage sludge annually via wastewater treatment.
A new study looks back into history to assess human impacts on the habitat of Asian #elephants and finds sharp declines starting several centuries ago.
Habitat loss has increasingly driven Asian elephants, like these foraging at a garbage dump in Sri Lanka, into human areas.
Until yesterday, the oak tree on the right looked very similar to the one on the left which is growing next to it. That was until one of my neighbours got a tree surgeon to basically massacre it, cutting out huge swathes of healthy branches.
One of the main reasons my immediate environment is so rich in birds is because of these trees, oak trees being the most biodiversity-friendly species in the UK.
I understand that attacking an oak so aggressively in late spring may severely weaken or even kill it. This is on top of disrupting the resident birds, squirrels and insects at a critical time of year.
The tree is over 100 years old.
We're in a climate and ecological crisis.
Please, someone, tell me that you understand when I say that witnessing this is like a bunch in the stomach. I feel like putting my arms around this poor violated tree and giving it a hug.
Leaders from Indigenous women’s organizations, environment and land management groups and philanthropists are meeting in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, for a forum aimed at strengthening the role of Indigenous women in Congo Basin land management and conservation.
Organizers hope the forum will result in a fund for Central African Indigenous women supporting biodiversity and climate resilience.
The #Ontario Government is proposing amendments to the Fish and #Wildlife#Conservation Act to allow new licenses for facilities that use captive foxes, coyotes and rabbits as bait to train #hunting dogs.
There are currently 24 of these Train and Trial facilities in Ontario. In 1997 the decision was made not to allow any more to be created, however the Ontario government proposes to change this decision. Petition.
