"Schmitz said the team had looked at nine species in detail, including tropical forest elephants, musk oxen and sea otters, and had begun to investigate others. He added: “Many of them show similar promise to these #bison, often doubling an ecosystem’s capacity to draw down and store #carbon, and sometimes much more. This really is a policy option with massive potential.”"
We have had the standard unit of area in geography as ‘the Wales’, volume ‘Olympic Swimming Pools’, dishonesty ‘the microJohnson', length ‘the Brontosaurs’, weight ‘the Adult Badger’ and now we have CO2 sequestered - ‘the Bison’. 🤣
Per NPS: "The incident occurred on the West Entrance Road near the Seven Mile Bridge, located 7 miles east of the park’s West Entrance.
Rangers responded to the area after receiving a report of an individual who harassed a herd of bison and kicked a bison in the leg. They located the suspect's vehicle near the West Entrance and stopped it in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana." #touron#yellowstone#bison
I had driven by this giant buffalo statue in #JamestownND a thousand times, but finally decided to stop and photograph it. I was surprised at how tall and anatomically correct it is. North Dakota's politicians could use a set of balls like these.
#Bison are the only animal that turn into a snowstorm rather than away from it because they instinctively know that walking into the storm will get them out of the weather quicker. There may be a life lesson for humans in this. It also makes for some epic pictures.
"Maintaining healthy populations of just nine key wild species (or groups of species) – including elephants and wolves, but also wildebeest, musk ox and bison, as well as marine fish, whales, sharks and sea otters – can play a vital role in controlling the carbon cycle on land and sea."

"The American #Buffalo, a new two-part, four-hour series, takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing the animal’s evolution, its significance to the #IndigenousPeople and landscape of the #GreatPlains, its near extinction, and the efforts to bring the magnificent mammals back from the brink.
"For thousands of generations, buffalo (species #bison bison) have evolved alongside #IndigenousPeople who relied on them for food and shelter, and, in exchange for killing them, revered the animal. The stories of Native people anchor the series, including the #Kiowa, #Comanche, and #Cheyenne of the Southern Plains; the #Lakota, #Salish, #Kootenai, #Mandan-#Hidatsa, and #Blackfeet from the Northern Plains; and others."
Did you know the Cheyenne follow bison so closely and for so many years, they have 27 different words for a bison, depending on its sex, age, or condition?
