1/ This is a Thread to include the entire text of petition #e4769 to have Parliament create a Fediverse server.
But first: Wow! This is the fastest House of Commons petition I've ever participated in! Almost 400 signatures in 24 hours! Canadian Fediversians want Parliament out of corporate social media and accessible to all!
2/ e-4769 (Media and telecommunications) Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
Members of all parties in the House of Commons, members of the Senate, and all officers of Parliament have a common interest and duty in communicating reliably with the people of Canada in trusted, resilient, and innovative ways;
3/ e-4769 (Media and telecommunications) Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
Traditional social media spaces have become sources of considerable controversy, harassment, misinformation, and strife but free, decentralized and federated alternatives are emerging;
“Wound Man” is an illustration which first appeared in European surgical texts during the Middle Ages. It laid out schematically the various wounds a person might suffer in battle or in accidents, with accompanying text stating treatments. Tag yourself as a wound. 😂
Whispers what if there is an e-petition in the works for Canada's Parliament to provide all MPs, Senators and others with a "free, decentralized, and federated" alternative to Twitter and other corporate social media platforms...

They've just joined many other civil society organizations in fully leaving the cesspool known as Twitter/X behind. Congratulations! Consider giving them a follow here :)
#aide#mastotips#twittermigration
I'm happy that #bluesky has allowed #RSS feeds. #Mastodon has done this for some time. However, since I'm not on bluesky, it is helpful for me to keep up with people who have ended up there as part of the #twittermigration. If only they supported #ActivityPub so I could follow/interact directly from here. #Fediverse FTW
My name is Kerem; I'm a photographer & also interested in 3D modeling & digital illustration. I enjoy Synthwave, Deep House & Dark Ambient music.
Like the most, I'm migrating from Twitter and looking for a proper place to share my work. It is really hard for someone like me who using Twitter as his main social media since 2008.
I hope I can make meaningful connections here too.
#Twitter
after I deleted my account entirely, I recreated it just to seal my previous username.
This allowed me today to make a quick random tour inside the astro part of it, in ages.
😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱
So much toxic and poisoning stuff I was not used about anymore, that I will need another month to recover.
(well the people are just the same people, no matter what's the platform, but there's indeed a selection bias towards certain kinds of ways of discussing things...) #twittermigration
Yesterday many left leaning pundits and journalists were suspended from TwitterX without notice. Some were subsequently reinstated after very public complaints from a few prominent individuals.
We have seen this tactic before. Musk uses the ban hammer to enforce self censorship. The message is clear, step over the line and you will be silenced.
Open message to journalists and others still on X Twitter. We have a very nice open social network over here, without Nazis, and not owned by any billionaires. You won't have to worry about being silenced for sharing your thoughts. We would love to have you join us in reshaping social media to benefit people instead of corporations. Come on over. At least give Mastodon a fresh look. Help us build a better future.
Ch.14 #Content
If there are subjects I don't want to deal with I can set filter words in my profile settings which will stop certain topics.
#Fediverse & it's different platforms + software have masses of clever tools, & different ways to adjust access & content.
We can communicate with people all over the Fediverse platforms seamlessly. Crucially we have masses of control over how & who we interact with. Block words, turn off boosts (eg by account), mute accounts, block accounts, block whole servers, shift servers ourselves.
We own this place, we control our experience. Nobody is inserting stuff in our timelines because someone paid them to modify what we see & find.
Ch.16 #Visibility
Having more followers does not make my posts more visible.
Following fewer people does not make my posts more visible.
Receiving faves does not make my posts more visible.
Ch.17 #Design
Some very clever people have been building this place, and they did not build it to monetize us, but to make people's connections better.
The code here is all open source. Without advertisers, shareholders, CEOs, venture capitalists.
There is no reason to make us anxious or aggressive. To make us click more, scroll faster or argue with each other. There is no1 to trade clicks & scrolls & posts to for ad$.
Everything runs on donations & volunteer time + skills.
CH.20
I realise #Fediverse is an evolving co-operating culture with it's common underlying protocol (#ActivityPub) linking many things. No 1 platform is trying to lock up all my attention in their walled garden to see their ads.
I can have several accounts, I can use several platforms. I can keep my circles, but I'm also free to move around & try new things as they emerge.
On phone or tablet or desktop, I can have many apps, but also a simple browser window will let me access the #Fedi in it's different flavours.
Ch.21
If we are after a particular feature that maybe we liked elsewhere, just ask if that feature is available! People are super helpful here and someone will come along to tell us all about options. #FediHelp is a great tag for that.
There are a lot of different front ends to use with your account/s. Some are apps we install to use with our Fedi accounts, some are browser based. Many of the Fedi's platform have all kinds of cool things in the settings too. #Help#Welcome#New#NewHere#SocialMedia#TwitterMigration#FediTips#Newbies
Ch.22
The different platforms work together, they communicate and evolve together.
It's more than fine to play around in the different platforms. It's actually a liberating thing, to not be locked to one platform as we were before.
Having all these options might sound complex, but using Fediverse community social is not like choosing a corporate social media platform. Your friends messages and communication spread across the community of platforms in the Fedi. It's not choosing 1 platform over another or getting stuck.
This site is a nice overview for some of the different Fedi platforms and what they do in co-operation, which corporate sites do apart.
