#TodayILearned that #SantaClaraCounty operates the first (and only?) drug donation pharmacy, where they take surplus drugs from healthcare providers and give them away FOR FREE to anyone with a prescription. They’ll even mail it to you if you want.
I thought the gesture navigation was part of #Samsung's One UI but apparently it's baked into #Android 13 by #Google.
A friend of mine has a #OnePlus and the gestures are all identical. #TodayILearned#TIL
#TodayILearned that #macOS#Spotlight will not index #iCloud Drive documents unless they are fully downloaded—unless you are searching for keywords stored in their extended attributes.
This is a surprisingly big oversight. The more you use #iCloudDrive to store your documents (which Apple somewhat encourages you to do), the more likely you won’t be able to find them by searching for their content with Spotlight.
#TodayILearned that Microsoft Bob was built with Asymetrix Toolbook (founded by Paul Allen), a HyperCard-like programming environment for Windows. And the binaries are still available! https://winworldpc.com/product/toolbook/10
"In 1876, at the age of 27, she desired to marry an older lawyer who was not to her mother's liking; she argued that her daughter could not marry a "penniless lawyer".[4] Her disapproving mother, angered by her daughter's defiance, locked her in a tiny, dark room in the attic of their home, where she kept her secluded for 25...
Basically, in this tale a farmer's girl lost her way in the forest and stumbled across a hut inhabited by seven dwarves. She asked them for a place to stay for the night, and received it (after the dwarves argued about who would get the honor of giving up his bed for the girl)....
When setting a timer with #Siri or #GoogleAssistant, on your #smartphone, #HomePod, or Google #Nest device, there is no need to use the phrase “set a timer for…” Just invoke your digital assistant and tell it the number of minutes or seconds you want:
“Hey Siri, 2 minutes,” or just hold down the side button on your #iPhone and say “two minutes.”
The same applies to #Google Assistant. “Hey Google, 30 seconds.”
TIL the word "nostalgia" originally meant severe homesickness and it was considered a disease. The meaning of a "longing for the past" was not recorded until the 1920s.
Back in the olden days, before the internet, when I ate meat and lived in Crofton Park, in South East London, I thought our local butcher looked a bit like one of the blokes from the band Japan
Apparently there is no definitive answer to why some languages are written left to right and some right to left, but one explanation says this has to do with the medium used for writing.
"Ancient Semitic languages like Hebrew and Arabic were chiseled into stones in ancient days.[...] Writing from right to left on a piece of paper would cause the ink to smudge because most individuals are right-handed."
#TodayILearned that when people who get abruptly put into hot environments they can get heat syncope (fainting) because their blood vessels quickly dilate to get blood closer to the skin to radiate heat. The dilation of these millions of tiny arterioles is enough to cause blood pressure to drop, reducing blood supply to the brain, which causes fainting.
I also learned that people who abruptly transition to hot climates will naturally increase the volume of blood in their body to compensate for this dilation. That’s why people feel better after spending a few days in a hot location.
