:BoostOK: Because DMs are not end-to-end encrypted on Mastodon or on any Fediverse social media platform, your instance admin can read your DMs, and so will any unauthorized individuals if the DMs gets leaked.
If you send a DM to anyone on the Fediverse, make sure it's something you wouldn't mind if it ever gets leaked. If you DO mind, use a privacy-respecting end-to-end encrypted platform like Signal, Session, or Matrix.
Alternatively, you can encrypt your messages using PGP if they list their PGP key in their bio and send them via DMs on the Fediverse. Even better, you can use PGP to send your Signal, Session or Matrix address via DMs.
Service-Toot: Die Messenger-Matrix wurde aktualisiert. Die Empfehlung für Threema wurde angepasst, nachdem nun ein formaler Sicherheitsaudit für das Krypto-Protokoll vorliegt.
The Signal messaging app has been facing battles in India, Russia, Iran and other countries for its unyielding stance on privacy. The platform's president @Mer__edith talks about how the company deals with restrictive legislation from countries like India, she talks about concerns over competitor Telegram and her threat to pull Signal out of the UK.
TIL: The #Signal desktop app on #Linux supports #spellchecking in multiple languages, but there is no selection UI. You can, however, list multiple locales in the LANGUAGE environment variable, delimited by colons. The first one selects the interface language. For example:
LANGUAGE=en_US:de_DE
will give you a US English interface and spell checking in US English and German (Germany).
No need to install anything, Signal will download dictionaries on first use.
“Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure, with assistance from Elon Musk” | @matthew_d_green
> Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, has recently been making a big conspiracy push to promote Telegram as more secure than Signal. This is like promoting ketchup as better for your car than synthetic motor oil. Telegram isn’t a secure messenger, full stop. That’s a choice Durov made.
Pavel Durov (Telegram), Jack Dorsey (ex-Twitter), DHH (37Signals) e Elon Musk (Tesla, X) estão atacando gratuitamente o Signal e suas líderes (chairwoman e CEO, duas mulheres). Por quê?
With #Threads and now with the new #Bluesky bridge, I'm really worried that #MastoAdmin s are doing a bad job of communicating what "federated" means.
Your Mastodon posts are PUBLISHED on the internet. As you read this they are being downloaded, legally, by hundreds of other computers. These computers belong to people you want to share with (other fedizens) and people you don't (surveillance capitalists). There is no reliable way to differentiate them.
If you want or need to control who can read your posts, you should urgently take steps to remove them from Mastodon* and switch to a secure communication protocol. I can recommend #Signal (https://www.signal.org) or #Matrix (https://matrix.org) for secure messaging and #Haven (https://havenweb.org) for private (micro)blogging.
Though note that there is no way of forcing people to honour requests to delete data. Copies will almost certainly remain somewhere, indefinitely.
Not sure when these were added, but I've noticed in the latest @signalapp beta that these handy but short tips on avoiding scams and alike in your inbox now exist. Good work to whoever had the idea :)
(Apologies if the media is in the wrong order lmao)
Today I discovered that you can only edit a #signal message a maximum of ten times. I had been keeping a record of a series of events over a number of days and adding new info as it happened, hoping to be able to send a single message at the end, but it finally refused to commit an edit saying ten edits is the max.
Thread by @matthew_d_green on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1789687898863792453.html Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure, with assistance from Elon Musk. The goal seems to be to get activists to switch away from encrypted Signal to mostly-unencrypted Telegram. #security Move to #signal
Tiens, tiens...
Is it (still) worth trying to switch my family and friends from WhatsApp to Signal? (Read all of it, please.)
This may sound a bit dumb, but eh....
