Ecosia, is it really so private?

A article about if Ecosia is really a private search engine.
I did spend a lot a time to analyze and investigate Ecosia, I hope this article helps people to better understand how private is Ecosia really and which are the downsides of it. Is the first article I ever written, so it isn't perfect. I'm open for feedback!

Ok, made the switch to #Firefox and wondering what extensions people recommend. I’ve installed Badger, Facebook Container, Search By Image, and Dark Background and Light Text.

PS - this was an EASY switch!

#DataPrivacyWeek Day 4

#Surveillance by #BigTech companies poses a big threat to our privacy.

In light of this, switching to a #privacy-friendly search engine is a quick and easy way to help you keep your online experience private. 🔒

What is your preferred privacy-oriented #SearchEngine? Do you use different ones for regular and private searches?

Oh no. The #searchEngine that plants trees, #Ecosia, have smashed #OpenAI’s chat feature into its product. 🫠

Looking for search engines that actually return anything relevant without having to comb through low quality/generated content or ads (so not Google/Bing ranked). Plus if it doesn't "hides" forums et al 🙄 Which one would you recommend based on experience? #search #searchEngine #metasearch

Europe is building it's own searchengine!

Looking at all the ridiculously big fines the US ones have collected for wrong-doing in europe, this is a great and welcome alternative.

Ah, they're on Fedi too! https://suma-ev.social/@openwebsearcheu

Search for "debian hamster" on DuckDuckGo and got some questionable results... which apparently, are from Bing. No, no, Bing, I was searching for "Debian Hamster" (which is a work related time tracking tool for tracking time spent on projects). Not this other search. But, SURE, let's throw LLMs at your crappy search data instead, that will fix the problem, I am sure.

Did you know..?

DuckDuckGo has two non-javascript versions of their search engine and both of them are very lightweight, especially the lite version.

You can access them via:

Html: https://html.duckduckgo.com/html

Lite: https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite

I was trying to figure out what actually meant. Sadly, is becoming much more susceptible to .

I'm afraid if I want a real , I may have to have to pay for it with .

I'm still a little fuzzy about what "Eid Mubarak" means, but I think it means essentially "Happy Holidays" to those who are participating in the feast at the end of the month of Ramadan. So, if that's you, Eid Mubarak!

My biggest annoyance with #DuckDuckGo is that it does not use #OpenStreetMap as the default #map provider when searching for place names. Is there a #searchengine that uses #osm by default?

badrihippo, to random
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

Do we have a #SearchEngine for public #git repos? :git:

Right now my "default" is to go to GitHub, and then maybe GitLab and Codeberg...but that leaves out all the other hosts out there. Once #ForgeFed happens we'll need it even more :fedi:

(By the way, I say "git" because that's where most code is, but if other kinds of repos are supported, even better! 🔍 )

I just realized that #AI “prompt engineering” is just SEO (“#SearchEngine optimization”) in reverse.

#SEO spams unique language into specific content in hopes of raising the latter’s rank when querying a corpus indexed by an opaque non-deterministic algorithm.

#PromptEngineering spams unique language into a query against a corpus indexed by an opaque non-deterministic algorithm in hopes of returning specific content.

I've been seeing a lot of Python folks talk about https://kagi.com search lately. I currently use Duck Duck Go, and I'm interested in trying Kagi. Are there any others I should look at as well? I don't mind paid if it does a good job, but it would be nice to have something I can get other people to try easily too.

The reason I recommend @duckduckgo as your default search engine is not only about privacy.

Did you know that DuckDuckGo can transfer your query to many thousands of different, subject-specific online search engines?

This could be Google, Wikipedia, IMDB or beyond that: media, forums, shopping or research sites. Or even XKCD.

You control where the search ends up… with a !bang.

It's only a single example, but I find it indicative of the results I get using https://kagi.com as my primary #searchengine.

Out of 4 #search engines (#Kagi, #DuckDuckGo, #Google, and #Bing), only Kagi gave me a result that was a review of someone actually using a microphone with a jogging stroller – and it was the top result. The others are basically just a jumble of unrelated microphone and #joggingstroller reviews.

Got my family subscription, Kagi. Let's go!

Screenshot of DuckDuckGo search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World, images, and “7 Best Jogging Strollers of 2023” from Good Housekeeping.
Screenshot of Google search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “The 3 Best USB Microphones of 2023” from The New York Times (Wirecutter), a bunch of questions”People also ask” about microphones being worth it, and Kidrunner (a hands-free jogging stroller that honestly does look pretty cool but only if you run on flat, perfectly maintained sidewalks, which is not my reality).
Screenshot of Bing search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World and a bunch of random info pulled from … maybe that page? It’s unclear. Way at the bottom and continuing “below the fold”, there is the beginning of an “Explore Further” list of more links to “best jogging stroller” listicles.

Decided to try @Mojeek as my default (switching from ). I like that they have their own crawler, instead of just using 's results. Let's see how this goes...

So with my new found knowledge of upsetting me and causing me to leave it... The fact the only other engines that are not just proxying google or bing... Is or and while brave one is nice... I just cannot bring myself to use something that funds a biggot... Then mojeek just feels dated and not great...

I am tempted at bringing fuzzysearx back... and even look at trying to leverage the built in ability to add custom engines to look at leveraging other abilities... because searxng really seems like the only ethical way I can see to leverage search engines collecting data...
