Apparently, according to my doctor & 2 specialists thus far - I shouldn't be able to do the hikes that I'm still regularly doing. Being told that, triggers old memories from my early childhood years when multiple orthopedic doctors & specialists studied me & my #polio for 20 yrs because I taught myself how to walk despite every single orthopedic drs telling me to get used to living my life from a wheelchair.
I beat every single medical odds & they never figured out how or why. (1/1)
This might be the wrong message to encourage vaccination.
Americans used to stories of vaccine success against polio have lost sight of just how devastating and terrifying a disease polio was into the 1950s.
“Most people in developed countries lack firsthand experiences of just how terrifying these diseases are, having never experienced polio, diphtheria, measles or pertussis, or lost family members to them.”
Confidence in ROUTINE childhood vaccinations declined during pandemic.
Vaccine hesitancy means Canada may not maintain it's comfortable level of herd immunity against preventable childhood illnesses.
There have been recent cases of #measles, whooping cough, and meningococcal disease in various parts of #Canada. #polio
When I visit my physician, not a mask in sight, other than the one I am wearing. Vaccination rate in my county is extremely low—less than 20% Non-vaccination rate correlates with Trump voter rate, which was about 85%. Quite a few of these are former students (or their parents or siblings). I TAUGHT SCIENCE!! I feel like a failure.
@Yorgus@thepoliticalcat I am a #PolioSurvivor who got #polio via live vaccine & I still support #vaccines. I don't think my rare case, very low percentage of ppl like me - reason to be against vaccines. They saves billions of lives. No vaccine is 100% protection but it increases chances of survival & it has helped many from getting illnesses that are preventable. I don't take my awful experience personally. I see the bigger picture. It's bigger than just ME.

If you don't yet know Professor Sheena Cruickshank, she's an immunologist based in UK & a member of Independent SAGE. When she says we urgently need social media to help re info about vaccine catch-up for teens/children who missed them during pandemic lockdowns, she knows what she's talking about... so adding my wee bit, here, to ask for lots of boosting on this one. https://fediscience.org/@Sheencr/110253573569315943
Gearing up to the 16th birthday of the Flickr Commons in less than two weeks. With millions of photos in the Commons and more coming in (nearly) every day it's hard to pick favorites.
Here's one from this week, from the State Library of New South Wales showing Shirley Winter using her toes to thread a needle in 1954, after losing the use of her hands due to polio 30 years earlier.
Another environmental (sewage) sample from Karachi has been found positive for polio which raised the current year’s tally for Pakistan to 55, according to sources in the National Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH)....
Polio cases now circulating worldwide, so the CDC moved to “level 2: practice enhanced precautions” if traveling to these countries: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/level2/global-polio (Note Canada and the UK are on this list…and Dr. Racaniello points out the US also has circulating #polio. 😜)
Basically, get the polio #vaccine if you haven’t, and get a booster if you have had the initial dose but it’s been a while.
#PPS was 1st introduced by Halstead in 1986, where he described the symptoms (muscle weakness, pain, & fatigue) experienced by #polio survivors who had stabled functional life before being diagnosed for PPS. The 1st description of PPS was in 1875 in French medical literature by Raymond & Charcot. In 1991, Halstead reviewed his criteria for the diagnosis of PPS & these include new muscle weakness as a required criterion for diagnosis, w/other symptoms such as cold intolerance, pain & fatigue.
Please understand that it takes A LOT of personal work, from us #polio survivors who now live with PPS. #PPS is a long recognized #illness. Yet, many of us who suffer from it, find it difficult to get knowledgeable medical help to manage it well.
If you have #LongCovid, I have bad news for you. You're gonna have to adapt/manage best you can because govt & #medical ppl won't help you much. Both of those entities knew about PPS for decades, yet ppl like me still have to fight to get help.
