I'm a big proponent of RSS feeds. Even run my own #FreshRSS RSS aggregator and reader & have custom #Calibre recipes for archiving #rss for pdf reading.
Mainly talking about websites could easily enter the #Fediverse social media field by turning on the #ActivityPub plugin on their existing #WordPress#blog setups.
Still, many people are letting a great resource pass by them by not utilizing RSS feeds that exist. Nice to see some RSS bridges like these. https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/
I wrote a quick #blogpost about how great word filters are on my #RSS feed, thanks to #FreshRSS! And they're pretty good here on #Mastodon too, when you want to avoid certain topics and themes, like the absurd amount of Prime Day deals on every tech website ever... :blobfoxangrylaugh:
Si par hasard vous cherchiez un lecteur #RSS gratuit, en ligne et compatible avec la plupart des apps sur smartphone, j’ai un #FreshRSS juste ici : https://news.beep.computer
My primary way of getting news? Good old #RSS with various reputable sources.
After the departure of Google Reader, I was using Feedly but in light of their AI surveillance efforts I canceled the account and run #FreshRSS on my tiny home server.
Client is #Reeder on iPhone and iPad - a perfect app if there ever was one.
So my favorite podcasting app decided to add a bunch of ads to its paid version. Time to look for a new solution! What are people using these days? I have a #FreshRSS instance, so a good client player app might be the ticket. #selfhosting
After an hour of work, I deployed FreshRSS. I'm very pleased because it runs on MyDevil.net hosting. Now I'm testing the Cron Job. If it works, I think it will be great.
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse,
today marks exactly 8 months since the BSD Cafe was announced to the world. Our community has grown and is made up of wonderful people who add tremendous value to the content seen both on our Mastodon instance and other channels (primarily Matrix).
For this, I am truly grateful!
One of the first services we launched was Miniflux, but, in fact, it never really "took off." The main reason, in my opinion, is that registrations are not open but require contacting me directly, which (I am aware) greatly limits the freedom to sign up. The reasons why Miniflux is not open for immediate registration are various, but the main one is that the developers offer paid hosting that helps fund the project. By offering a free service with immediate access here, I risked undermining them - something I wanted to avoid.
Therefore, I have decided to introduce another RSS Reader, namely FreshRSS. Registrations are open and free, and the tool, like the others, runs exclusively on BSD systems (currently, FreeBSD).
I will update the wiki page with information and instructions as soon as possible, but the server is already active and operational for a few days - and is now on the Status page.
I'm still heavily relying on RSS for a lot of blogs, websites, and even YouTube channels (I don't have a Google account, and by some miracle, YT channels still have an RSS feed – I suppose Googlers simply forgot to remove the feature). I host my own RSS reader though (using #FreshRSS), so I'm probably not in the stats mentioned in the article.
It was about time I wrote about my #RSS shenanigans with #FreshRSS and such things. Basically I marked everything as read by mistake and decided to accept it and move on. And add a bunch of new feeds too!
