In 1959, there was an uproar in #Alabama and other segregationist circles about The Rabbits Wedding, about a black rabbit and a white rabbit who got married. Written by the same author who drew pictures for Charlotte's Web and Little House on the Prairie, it struck too close to home. Now, it has been turned into a play. Piss off a Republican -- place the book in your local library and attend the play. #Books#Theatrehttps://eugeneweekly.com/2024/04/11/very-little-theatre-offers-an-unusual-view-of-segregation/
I had a GYN checkup along with my annual physical. The nurse filling in forms asked me about history of births, stillbirths, miscarriages, abortions. I told her in this state of #Alabama I'd never tell a doctor if I'd ever had an abortion bc one day the state will come for all women's medical records & start attacking even old ladies like me. So I said the answer for your computer data is NO. I had several miscarriages and didn't even tell her that. #fascism#theocracy#abortion#VoteBlue
Public library staff in an Alabama town have locked up the library and walked off their jobs after the library's director was fired. The director had refused to remove 113 books with LGBTQ+ content from circulation after being ordered to do so by a library board dominated by right-wing Christian fundamentalists.
BREAKING: Civil rights groups sue over #Alabama's new Republican-backed voter suppression law that, among its restrictions, makes it a felony for most people to help a voter request, complete and return an absentee ballot.
The groups allege the law severely burdens the work of civic engagement groups and voters who rely on assistance, particularly elderly voters, voters with disabilities, incarcerated voters and low-literacy voters.
#Alabama bans #DEI in schools and says bathrooms must be designated by ‘biological sex’
The law (SB129) bans ‘assigning “fault, blame or bias” to any race, religion, gender or color, or discussions of whether “slavery and racism are aligned with the founding principles of the United States’
#MarilynLands, a Dem who made #ReproductiveRights a centerpiece of her campaign in deeply #conservative#Alabama, won a special election to the Alabama Legislature.
Lands’ victory in the suburban district in the #DeepSouth state was celebrated by #Democrats who have attempted to portray the state #GOP as too extreme on #abortion & reproductive rights.
"Democrats have strong reason to cheer this rather amazing election result [in Alabama], particularly because it confirms, once again, that the Dobbs decision is politically radioactive for the GOP. The IVF case out of Alabama further proved that social and religious extremists are still far from done, and that their weak compatriots in Washington will readily enable them."
Holy cow. In #Alabama, the open seat was won by a #Democrat. It was last won by a MAGA #Repubilcan election denier by a margin of 7 points. It's a 10 point win. A 17 point swing.
Erin Reed reports on how Southern states (i.e., solidly Republican-voting ones) are pushing hard to quash all legal recognition of trans people. They want to invisibilize and cancel trans people. She writes,
"Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama all are advancing bills that 'define sex' to exclude transgender people from any legal recognition of their gender."
The depravity of another Trump sycophant twisting someone’s personal story to smear Biden for their own political gain was beyond despicable. #KatieBrittResign
How can someone be this old, and this ignorant? This dumb #goober apparently lives in a world defined by whatever bullshit happens to be passing through his head at any given moment. He's completely untethered from reality. The people of #Alabama should be ashamed of themselves for facilitating his election to America's premiere legislative body.
