Do you like it when browsers share any function of your browsing history with every random website you visit to target Ads? Well, get ready, Google Chrome pushes ahead with targeted ads based on your browser history https://www.theregister.com/2023/09/06/google_privacy_popup_chrome/ #privacy #security

The Evil Company

Now we know who it was in Mr Robot

DonKerns,

@nixCraft or just use Firefox and be done with the spyware

MHowell,

@nixCraft
Sigh. Just finished a project researching far right websites for my work...

nakdim,

@nixCraft People should just (package manager command to remove) chrom{e,ium}. Simple. Besides, I think it's a swiss cheese of security holes...

@nixCraft It was inevitable that a browser developed by a company with a business model consisting almost entirely of advertising revenue would do this, but when you dangle shiny new software in front of most users, they don't spend much time thinking about the deeper ramifications.

You can't keep dancing with the devil and ask why you're still in hell.

BanditRun90s,

@nixCraft adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.chrome
Final answer.

@nixCraft Thank goodness there are alternatives to Chrome

@nixCraft I am constantly disgusted by Apple, and to some degree also by Mozilla. Then look around what goes on in the rest of the "industry", and keep using Macs and Firefox.

(I do not have a long enough life to keep spending it on trying to get a Linux desktop functional enough. Then do it again, when some upgrade inevitably breaks it.)

@nixCraft Now the WEI thing starts to make more sense.

@nixCraft @briankrebs And this is where I switch browsers.

Scorpion_Byte13,

@nixCraft been using vivaldi for about a year now.

CdnCurmudgeon,

@nixCraft Not surprising, and I expect most browsers do (or will do) the same. But I don't use Chrome since Google's digital gangster attack on Canadian sovereignty and won't use them until they stop the extortion. Ditto with Meta (FB and Threads).

katerberg,

@nixCraft @briankrebs this is what happens when. One browser gets dominant market share

Infopunk,

@nixCraft That's why I use Brave and LibreWolf.

@nixCraft

Would it kill them to slightly generalize and anonymize it? They’d probably get more click-throughs and sales. Over-specific ad serving is pointless because it’s probably something you’ve already bought or decided against buying,

So we get all the privacy violation but also the Taboola chum of gross trypophobia thumbnails and completely false, borderline defamatory celeb gossip often featuring the wrong person in the photo. Not relevant to my interests, guys!

catavz,
@catavz@mastodon.social avatar
PhotoshopArt,

@nixCraft you can turn it off.

SpaceLifeForm,

@nixCraft

Recommend not using.

fakeplastictree,

@nixCraft The audacity to call it the "enhanced ad privacy", lmao.

david,

@nixCraft I'll add that to the long list of reasons I don't use Chrome.

dukeboitans,
