First just to us on Mastodon, Spoutible and Post

Many of us are in Twitter exile. This Trump trial would have been easy to monitor 'properly' on the old Twitter, but here in exile, we had to do with curated content

THANK YOU LAFFY AND NONILEX at Mastodon

You kept us informed almost like Twitter

I’m emerging from my social media hiatus to share recent comments from Ken Burns. I’ve chatted with him a few times over the years, always to my benefit. He’s very worried about American democracy — I think with good reason.

Here’s a video excerpt from his speech at Brandeis:

A transcript of his speech:

A DDOS against the Internet Archive has commenced again, timed for maximum pain for the California staff to deal with. (I don't sleep, but I also can't do anything on the infrastructure here.)

So, we're down until people wake up to deal with the constant DOOS against us because... reasons

Senators Rubio, Vance, & Scott, among others, refuse to say they'll accept election results
SCOTUS Justices Alito & Thomas are actively in support of insurrectionists
Speaker Johnson wants the Bible to supersede the Constitution

Fascism isn't headed to America—it's already here.

This is why I cannot stand people who say they won't vote

If they are in a group or an area that voter suppression is pointed at I understand and I forgive

But you have many #Americans, many right here on #Mastodon, loudly proclaiming they won't vote

It is melodramatic to say for most elections that it is a crisis that requires you to vote

But there is zero melodrama in saying that Nov 2024 is absolutely crucial for everyone to vote, no excuses

Do not be entitled!

#Vote!

If you're older, you've got to stop scaring kids & young voters with statements like "we need huge systemic changes". We do and we don't. They are left with the mistaken impression that we need a violent revolution. We don't need that & we don't want it. Although our western democracies are imperfect, they're good enough to get the job done - if we would only use the levers available to us. Taxation and regulation are very, very powerful tools. That's why conservatives want to take them away.

Reason 14,456 Mastodon is better than Twitter: Yesterday after Iran launched its massive missle and drone strike on Israel, Twitter was awash with FUD about how Biden had started WWIII.

I’m not kidding, the entire site was one conspiracy thread after another that world war 3 was about to start. Air traffic closed over Washington DC, Netanyahu had left Israel in the only jet allowed to fly there, accompanied by spurious screenshots of air traffic radar. It’s still happening NOW.

Utter trash.

As a lifelong, passionate @nytimes reader and occasional writer, it's dizzying how consistently awful and irresponsible its headlines, subheds, ledes, and spin about Biden and Trump have been. I honestly feel nausea and vertigo seeing headlines and subheds like this.
