After writing this note on Recall (https://mastodon.social/@sarahjamielewis/112482021770758791) a few weeks back, I've received many messages under the assumption that I don't understand how DRM / OS interaction works.

As if the integration of a broken, backwards technology into the core of our computing systems happened by accident.

"No, you see the OS doesn't get to see those bits of the screen, so it totally makes sense why the system scraps your financial documents and passwords but not netflix" - utterly unhinged worldview

I mean, look. Rescued master tapes of interviews with the likes of Douglas Adams, Bill Gates, Atari’s Jack Tramiel, MacPaint’s Bill Atkinson, Infocom’s Joel Berez, Star Trek’s Gene Roddenberry, musician Herbie Hancock, EA’s Trip Hawkins....

They want to do it RIGHT right, so they're paying a professional to do it. The gofundme is here:

Let's put this one to bed quickly. Two episodes are already digitized, there's 54 in total.

I created a little blog entry to link your Amiga to the internet via a Serial link and RPi. Not quick but functional. Just a little something worth sharing.

Cool, all my tokens are gone. Because an project got bought by a shady company, which now, after almost a year of owning it, broke the app with their first(!!) update to it!

Oh and of cause they want money in form of a subscription now. Can't make this shit up.

In short: DON'T USE !

The issue tracker on Github is fun though: https://github.com/raivo-otp/ios-application/issues

vague memory of someone else’s debugging story from i can’t remember where … :

they are called to an office which is complaining that the wifi stops working for two hours twice a day

this office is in portsmouth so it’s fairly obvious that the timing is related to the tides

but what on earth? how can the wifi be sensitive to the tides?!

Everything I’ve done recently getting my #Amiga 600 up and running would have been impossible without web searching (and finding!) answers to long forgotten problems.

If this knowledge was produced now, it would unfortunately end up in a convo on a Discord server somewhere and would be impossible to search (and find…)

Stop using Discord for anything else than just chatting. Stop dumping knowledge into a black hole. Use forums. Use the open web. Future nerds will thank you.

Hey Canadian nerds! I have held the domain registration for regex.ca for a very long time. When I lived in Canada it was my primary domain, but I haven't used it for years. Does anyone on the fediverse have a good use for it?

I'm going to release it but if you've got a good pitch I'll pay for a 1 year renewal and then transfer it to your ownership.

Please boost for visibility kthx!

By weaving popsicle sticks together in a specific pattern, there is a build up potential energy (stored energy) in the bent and twisted sticks. When released from one end, this stored potential energy is converted into kinetic energy (energy of motion) as the sticks rapidly unfurl & fly through the air in a chain reaction.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Some screenshots of Recall's SQLite database here: https://mastodon.social/@detective/112513529733646088

Just to clarify, I can access it without SYSTEM too. Microsoft are about to set cybersecurity back a decade by empowering cyber criminals via poor AI safety. Feature ships in a few weeks.

GossiTheDog,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

The latest Risky Business episode on Recall is good, but one small correction - it doesn’t need SYSTEM rights.

Here’s a video of two MSFT employees gaining access to the Recall database folder - with SQLite database right there. Watch their hacking skills. (You don’t need to go this length as an attacker, either). Cc @riskybusiness

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say this is the dumbest cybersecurity move in a decade. Good luck to my parents safely using their PC.
