Not sure if anyone cares but I will be migrating from SFBA.social in the near future. The mod team has made the decision to federate with #Threads and I will not support it with my posts or donations. I do not believe in the slightest that Meta has good intentions or will it respect my privacy.

A simple thought about the Threads debate: The fediverse is a federation of communities with many many community members, who now have plenty of choices on how to engage in social networks online - Thanks to the ActivityPub protocol.

That choice is not being threatened by adding more options.

Let’s be welcoming and communicate (and act on) our values and server rules!

Wondering if all this fiddling with ZFS and big box of hard drives is worth it, went to compare it to AWS elastic file storage and whelp...

I've downloaded 100TB (more, but 100 is round number) of data so far. To store that in EFS near me, that would cost $0.33/GB/month to store, $0.03/GB to read, and $0.07/GB to write. Downloading the data does a 100% write (obvi) and read (checksumming). So merely to get the data it would cost $10,000, and to park it for ONE MONTH would cost $33k.

That's more than the whole NAS for ONE MONTH. and the NAS has 500TB. Even with 25% storage efficiency from mirroring and backups, we could afford to buy a new NAS every month instead of using AWS. That's a hell of a scam.

md,

@jonny @adam42smith @jeremyforest
There is a certain point (data size, speed, etc.) where doing it yourself becomes cheaper than outsourcing. Even if renting rack space in different regions.

Figuring out that point is a a little hard.

md,

@jonny @adam42smith @jeremyforest
That sounds great in theory.

Then we have to look at funding. Funding any shared resource is nightmare. I've worked in very large corporations and a large NGO think tank. People always fight against paying their share for storage.

yes, yes it can.

I think they should continue burying seeds. Why have an need date? New seeds can selected base upon knowledge gained from previous parts of the experiment.

Additionally seeds that have genetically modified or any other modifications not available at the start of the experiment could be tested.

Brief reminder on cryptocurrencies.
When trying to understand any form of cryptocurrency, understanding valuation relative to something similar is useful:
1 crypto coin == 3 Dutch 1637 tulips == 1/2 unicorn horn == 0.1 the Carnwennan dagger == 1 vial with 5 mermaid tears == 1/3 scroll of invisibility to dragons

Those are approximate as the value of each frequently changes from 0 to multiples of the square root of -1. For the most up-to-date values, check with the clerks at Gringotts.

Do you have any sources? I'm not familiar with chainalysis.

I'm familiar with crypto coins., I used to mine Monero when it was called Darkcoin. Used to buy BTC in large amounts and resell in smaller amounts making $ on the price difference.

Many buyers were online gamblers. Definitely some money laundering. The res were most like getting coins to but drugs on darknet markets (which I also have experience in).

I used to think that US-101 is the most depressing highway of the Bay Area, but now I think I-880 easily takes the crown.

While you get zombie drivers hogging lanes and bits of Forever Gravel™ trapped in mile-long pockets getting kicked into your windshield on US-101, on I-880 between Hayward and I-80, you get All-Day Traffic Jams For Nothing™, frequent encounters with Dodge Charger and/or Genesis Coupe drivers weaving through at 100 mph, and armed road-ragers. There has to be a damn good reason for me to get on that highway.

    Apparently, there's a 25-year-old, tastefully modified Toyota Century on air suspension driving around Croatian northern regions. And it's being daily-driven! 🤩

    Toyota Century is the luxurious pinnacle of Toyota's know-how, a car made for the Imperial House of Japan and top executives, it's an exclusively Japan-only model, so it's also a right-hand drive.
