UPDATE: COVID wastewater levels are low in most US states.

If you've been holding off on healthcare or other activities, now is one of the best times of the year to go.

Note that even in low periods you are still at risk of COVID exposure, so it makes sense to take precautions.

CDC data shows that COVID wastewater levels are low or minimal in all four US regions.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

An important caveat with CDC's current wastewater level rankings is that compared with spring and summer of the first two years of the pandemic, there's still a notable amount of COVID spread in lulls thanks to more transmissible variants.

(chart below uses old CDC levels)

Compared with the winter peak, COVID exposure risk in spring in the US has decreased around 4-5 fold, but can still be significant in crowds, so it's important to still take precautions like masking.

UPDATE: In the US, COVID wastewater levels are now low.

If you've been holding off getting healthcare or doing other indoor activities, now is one of the best times of the year to do these things more safely.

luckytran,

Based on patterns from previous years, in the US, spring and early summer are usually the times when there is lower COVID-19 transmission compared to other times of year.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

Although COVID wastewater levels are relatively lower now, there is still a "substantial" baseline level of COVID (thanks to more transmissible variants), so it still makes sense to take precautions like masking when possible (e.g. in healthcare settings).

There is never any excuse for leaving a hospital looking like this. Healthcare is a human right. Ceasefire now.

People have spent years downplaying COVID by saying "it's just the flu." This is reckless for many reasons, one of those being that new flu strains pose a constant threat to public health. I really hope we don't have to experience directly how devastating the flu can be.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

To be clear, there are no signs of human-to human transmission of the bird flu strain that is spreading among dairy cattle, and has infected a person in Texas. But please understand that we monitor and worry about new flu strains because they are a serious threat. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/01/health/bird-flu-cattle-human.html

Anti-maskers: “We should be free to choose to do what we want.”

Also anti-maskers: “I don’t feel comfortable sitting next to somebody with a mask on.”

Hypocrites.

One impact of COVID that we don’t talk about enough is how people are avoiding medical care because of lack of precautions like masking in healthcare settings. This doesn’t show up as COVID deaths or hospitalizations but delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment increases the mortality rate of other diseases like cancer.

Exciting news: We are getting closer to passing a bill that would provide free masks and tests through the mail to NYC residents!

The next important step is a health budget hearing THIS THURSDAY.

Testimonies are 2-3 minutes, and you can have Zoom on in the background while you wait your turn, so it's easy to do!

You don't need to be a NYC resident to testify. If you have visited NYC, please testify too, as a free mask program helps everyone.

When weakening their COVID guidelines, one of the main justifications the CDC used is that the number of people with Long COVID is 'decreasing.'

In reality, the CDC's own data shows an alarming increase Long COVID in recent months.
