A new @pewresearch survey shows that people of color continue to be more concerned than white people about becoming sick from COVID-19, and spreading COVID-19 to other people.

The @pewresearch survey also shows that people with lower incomes are more concerned than people with higher incomes about becoming sick from COVID-19, and spreading COVID-19 to other people.

And yes, the survey also shows that there's a continuing partisan gap in the US on concerns about COVID-19.

While the partisan differences in attitudes to COVID-19 gets a lot of coverage, we don't talk enough about how racial and economic inequities still persist and need to be addressed.

Ending funding for COVID-19 protections and treatments, and weakening COVID-19 guidelines disproportionately impacts marginalized communities. Yet, marginalized communities are never adequately centered in the decision-making about public health policy changes.

Four years ago, when WHO leader, Dr. Tedros, declared COVID-19 a public health emergency, he said:

"We cannot say this loudly enough, or clearly enough, or often enough: all countries can still change the course of this pandemic."

These words still apply today.

4 years ago today, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

Today, we will rightfully remember the tens of millions of people who have died. We must never forget.

But we must also remember that COVID-19 is still killing, disabling, and excluding too many people today.

We are still in a pandemic. We still need to act.

“In the earliest days of the AIDS crisis, America ignored the problem, even though people were dropping dead by the thousands.

We’re repeating the mistake now with long COVID. Millions are suffering, but the government has largely turned its back, as new cases emerge with each passing wave.”

Long-term, sustainable solutions to COVID:

➡️ Develop next-gen/nasal vaccines that greatly reduce transmission
➡️ Normalize masking and make respirators free
➡️ Regulate indoor air quality
➡️ Develop effective treatments for Long COVID
➡️ Make healthcare free and guarantee paid sick leave

Governments are saying we need long-term solutions to COVID as an excuse for weakening public health protections. This is deceitful and counterproductive. The sustainable solutions to COVID are the same ones they are dismantling. We should be building on them, not taking them away.

“NOTE: We expect the CDC to rescind the 5 day isolation period in the very near future. Once the CDC guidance is updated, employees will no longer be eligible for Covid pay for any period of isolation.”

Employers were ready for the CDC change so they could end sick pay.

We absolutely need an alternative to Twitter, but Threads, Instagram, and Facebook all being down at the same time shows how dangerous it is to consolidate all social media under a single corporation, and people need to stop encouraging it.

Just days after the CDC weakened its COVID isolation guidelines, the White House is suspending its free home rapid test program.

This week is your last chance to order free COVID rapid tests here: https://special.usps.com/testkits

"Americans won't be able to order free COVID tests from the U.S. government again after Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services told Axios Monday."

It's shameful that public health institutions are fixated on weakening guidelines for people who are ignoring the pandemic, while doing nothing to meaningfully address one of the most important public health problems today: Higher risk people being excluded from society.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

It's a huge public health problem when the people who are most vulnerable or higher risk have to delay medical care because of the lack of basic public health protections. This is increasing the burden of disease in society, yet won't show up as COVID hospitalizations or deaths.

Imagine if instead of making COVID isolation guidelines as weak as the flu...

We approved combo rapid tests like this and made them free and available for everyone...

So that people could tell how long they need to isolate based on science and not feelings, whatever the pathogen.

The CDC:

luckytran, to random
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

How long are you contagious with COVID-19?

Here's what the science says:
➡️ Most people are infectious for ~10 days
➡️ ~80% of people test positive for 5 days after symptom onset
➡️ Only ~30% of people who test positive have a fever
➡️ Presence of symptoms is an unreliable indicator of infectiousness
➡️ Individuals can be infectious before the onset of symptoms
➡️ Asymptomatic cases represent around 20 to 40% of all infections

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

The best way to tell when you are not infectious anymore is to have consecutive negative tests for COVID. And if you are unable to stay home the entire time, it's critical to wear an N95 mask to prevent spreading the virus to others.

Some claiming CDC was forced to weaken isolation guidelines as many people in the US don't have enough paid sick leave so no one is isolating.

This is poor excuse. Weakening guidance only makes it harder to pass sick leave polices because politicians will say it isn't needed anymore.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

It isn't a coincidence that right as the CDC has weakened its COVID guidance, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is moving to strip away the paid sick days that New Yorkers infected with COVID-19 have been guaranteed since the beginning of the pandemic.

If public health agencies can't even advise people to stay home the full time when they are sick, they have given up on trying to prevent disease.
