People have spent years downplaying COVID by saying "it's just the flu." This is reckless for many reasons, one of those being that new flu strains pose a constant threat to public health. I really hope we don't have to experience directly how devastating the flu can be.

To be clear, there are no signs of human-to human transmission of the bird flu strain that is spreading among dairy cattle, and has infected a person in Texas. But please understand that we monitor and worry about new flu strains because they are a serious threat. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/01/health/bird-flu-cattle-human.html

@luckytran I used to work in homeless shelters and watched the flu tear through every winter and kill people.

Anyone who doesn't think the flu is a problem is blissfully ignorant.

When I heard people saying covid was "just a flu" I didn't totally know how to react. The idea of a second flu is terrifying.

@luckytran I believe the panic over avian flu (in the last 15 years) that turned out to be (luckily) unwarranted, made people significantly less prone to take pandemics seriously, of course, disinformation is responsible of most of the bad behavior, but it had to build on something, and that last experience was immensely "helpful".
