    How toxic is #TikTok?

    In #China they have a different version of #TikTok, Chinese users get to see different content compared to the rest of the world

    And sure! #China bans everything that's just a little against their regime like mstdn.social for example but the thing is..

    TikTok is a Chinese based company with the CCP keeping an close eye. And not only on the "Chinese data" 😉

    lippyduck,
    @lippyduck@mstdn.social avatar

    @stux Yes, and as I wrote elsewhere just now, whatever data protection our own laws afford us will be very much harder to enforce in China. Cf. copyright.

    Big news in bug math. This is the first year since 1803 when both 13-year cicadas and 17-year cicadas will emerge from the ground simultaneously in the US!

    13 and 17 are both prime. It's believed cicadas evolved to have prime-number life cycles, thus avoiding predators that emerge more frequently, like once every 4 years or 5 years or... whatever. By showing up infrequently, with a prime number life cycle, cicadas can starve out those predators.

    And since 13 and 17 are both prime and 13 × 17 = 221, both kinds of cicadas emerge simultaneously only once every 221 years. And

    1803 + 221 = 2024

    so now they'll both emerge simultaneously and we'll have 𝑙𝑜𝑡𝑠 of cicadas!

    Also, this year the two kinds can interbreed! Maybe they're be fruitful and multiply... and we'll get 221-year cicadas. 😆

    The last time the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year cycle, Thomas Jefferson was president.

    lippyduck,
    @lippyduck@mstdn.social avatar

    @johncarlosbaez My hunch would be that it's not the primeness per se that outsmarts the predators. Rather just the long, fixed period with there being something in the genes that makes those numbers easier to code.

    @coreyspowell Fascinated to see gravity working at small scale.The NASA article says the images are taken 13 seconds apart. Orbit radius maybe 1km if compared with the body sizes given? I make it 5 shots (~1min) to do about half an orbit (unless it does more than a whole orbit each time). 3km/min=50m/s (180km/h). Could fairly easily estimate their densities.

    Scientists build traps to manage the UK’s rising number of Chinese mitten crabs.

    The Chinese mitten crab was first sighted in the UK in 1935. Since then its population has exploded.

    It is classified by conservationists as one of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world. Now, a group of scientists are hoping they have found a way to deplete the UK’s rapidly growing Chinese mitten crab population.
