Abandoned farm. I learned two fun facts on this trip. The first is that stinging nettles were mixed in with the weeds surrounding the barn. The second fun fact is that even if you just brush against them, stinging nettles are surprisingly painful. Anyway, here's more abandoned houses and farms if you are interested: https://www.abandonedamerica.us/abandoned-homes

@AbandonedAmerica I once (out of guileless curiosity) full-on squeezed a nettle stalk on a short hike when I was about 10-11. Never made that mistake again! At least it faded fairly quickly.

Here's one of my favorites:

@RickiTarr Aside from the stupidly obvious tracks like Hotei's "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" (you know it even if you don't know the name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVNMZA6lbT8 ), a personal favorite is Motörhead's "Stay Clean:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j1ZSgPtaaQ .

Specifically for starting housework, though, there's a newer Pitbull and Li'l Jon dance track called "JUMPIN" that heavily samples House of Pain's "Jump Around" and it's just too fun. I can't not move to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXt65SavWkc

@flexghost this prompt put me in mind of a Little River Band track off Sleeper Catcher (1978), the album that gave the world 'Reminiscing' and 'Lady.' Aside from another minor single, you'd think the rest of the album was full of the pop rock also-rans typical of that era, and that's mostly the case - except for the A-side closer, an 8-minute river of deeply pleasant evening atmosphere called 'Light of Day.' It's criminal how few people know about it. (Currently dry.)

Pretty sure what happened is:

  1. I decided to record Underworld because I hadn't seen it;

  2. I watched a few minutes and got bored because it was all guns;

  3. I deleted it immediately from the hard drive and eventually from my memory;

  4. I decided to record Underworld because I hadn't seen it;

  5. I watched a few minutes and got bored because it was all guns;

  6. I deleted it immediately from the hard drive and we'll see about my memory.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@Cassandra the secret with Underworld is, if you don't like watching Kate Beckinsale acrobatically murdering legions of enemies, you won't get much out of them no matter how you try - except for the third film (Rise of the Lycans), which is a completely different story set hundreds of years before the other films! It's corny as an Iowa county fair, but Danny McBride co-wrote the screenplay, and Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy are in top form, so it's just... fun, in a way the other films aren't.

The epic linguistic map came up in conversation at work today, so today is one of those days to regularly to pause and spend some time admiring this map of North American English dialects by Rick Aschmann:

https://aschmann.net/AmEng/

#linguistics #LinguisticGeography #cartography #OutsiderArt #NorthAmerica #maps #dialect #dialectology

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@alan it's impressive, but woefully incomplete IMHO - I can think of at least five different dialects just along the I-5 corridor alone, from Chicano English and the modified Valleyspeak (which I mentally call the "skater's dialect") of Humboldt County and the Emerald Triangle to the Portland dialect's fronted vowels and the flat, country radio-informed pseudo-twang of lumber town natives. It's silly to paint everything west of Denver as one huge blob of homogeneity with a few small enclaves!

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr heck, I still remember this, though I sometimes wish I didn't, just so I could pretend I was better:

  • not hearing much about queer people until age 13
  • getting a peer lesson that "gay" and related terms were devastating insults, and flexing my newly-acquired "bad words"
  • finally getting pushback from someone as a HS freshman, realizing what I'd been doing, and making the choice to stop.

I get why we'd rather forget stuff like that; it's unpleasant. But it's important too!

My partner(?) made spaghetti sauce with fake meat and brought some over to share with me. I tried to get him to give me a sense of the eat-by date.

Him: “It lasts a long time!"

Me: "So, like, two months?”

Him: "... Like a week.”

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@Cassandra home cooked food typically stays good to eat for 2-5 days in the refrigerator, so that may have been what he was thinking! A week is respectable for freshly made food. You might ask him if it freezes well, too; I make a vegan pea soup that only keeps in the fridge for maybe a week, but freezes very well for 3-4 months. Could be a way to stretch your supply if you like it

If for some reason captains had to death match, who would win?

Please feel free to share your reasoning.

(I am only allowed four options.)

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@Cassandra I picked Sisko, mostly because he's been my fave since I was about 14, but also because he's shown an indomitable willingness to fight with any tools against any odds, even to the point of betraying his own principles, for the greater good. Assuming he had a strong enough justification, I think he'd pull it out. (He also has access to more allies than any other captain, because of his status as the Emissary of the Prophets. Most of Bajor would fight under his banner if asked.)

Periodic reminder: If you oppose DRM, the way to show it is to popularize media published without it! I've gotten quite into audioshows like Wolf359, Magus Elgar, The Red Panda Adventures, & The Magnus Archives! And so much more!

Also there's webcomics like Pepper&Carrot or Lackadaisy. Or shorts like Blender's!

Enjoying "popculture" legitimately is miscounted by politicians (& e.g. W3C) as support for DRM, whilst "piracy" is miscounted as justification.

@alcinnz just popping in to say that I listened to the original run of Wolf 359 several years ago and absolutely loved it. The first few episodes aren't that good, but they get better (and longer) as they go; by the time they released episode 9 or so, I was totally hooked. It's cool to see it come up again on my timeline in 2024! (...assuming you aren't talking about something else 😅)

doctorLURK,

@Cassandra haha, I had to pick The Great Wall! I saw the last ~1 hour(?) of it on fancy hotel TV once, a couple years ago, and as a (totally unrealistic) visual spectacle, it was fun enough to keep switching back to it between whatever else we were watching.

Wish I could vote for Trading Places, because it's fairly funny and has a decent social message, but there's hella blackface in act 3, and as always, that just doesn't cut the mustard, no matter how well-intentioned.

family: in case you haven't heard, there's a brief but severe watch for our area from Friday afternoon (January 12th) through Saturday night. Expect overnight lows around 11° Fahrenheit, with a Saturday high between 20-25°, wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour, and up to 8 inches of snow. In that probably means power outages, too, and some equipment (like heat pumps) may not operate well in the cold. Please prepare so you can safely endure this. Stay warm! Good luck!

@RickiTarr oh wow, not at all? We hardly went until I was a tween (read: until my folks bought their house), but after that, we went a few times a year.

Though now that I think about it... yeah, most of the time, it was the video store or bupkis, wasn't it?

Ha, this exchange reminded me that the summer after I graduated high school, I had all my friends over for a night and we rented like 5 movies and just put them on one after another while we did stuff. Good times.
