What are your true opinions and thoughts on marriage?

Just for fun, this is a photo from my wedding day (ignore the reflection of my phone lol) I was all of 21.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I think... it's for any couple that wants it. To some people, like me, it's significant: it's the rare secular rite that signifies something (basically) intangible, a way to mark one's relationship as crucial to one's ideal life. To other people, it's cramped, limiting buncom, weighed down by centuries of social expectations that keep it from being what it's supposed to be. Still others simply have no use for it. These are all valid outlooks. But personally, I like being married!

What's your favorite wedding song?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr our wedding music was Debussy's Arabesque #1 - a fairly classic choice, but still one of my favorites.

I've officiated weddings before, too, including one just this year, so I actually have a whole (small) playlist each of walk-up songs and first dance songs, for couples who don't have anything in mind. Example tracks:

Sun Kil Moon - You Are My Sun
Antonio Carlos Jobim - Vivo Sohando
Iron & Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth

It's been a minute since I've done a music question, so here goes:

Who is an artist/band that you're annoyed you like?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Tool. Not because of the band itself, in particular, but because the hardcore fan base is irritating and totally exhausting to be around. The music is pretty good, but I never talk about it because I don't want to be associated with the "county fair drug dealer in a striped felt stovepipe hat" and "sweaty, mindlessly aggressive mosh pit instigator" types who seem to comprise a majority of their most ardent fans.

Basic seasoning

When you're cooking, do you take great care to not cross-contaminate your salt and pepper?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@Cassandra I usually pour salt out of the container into a measuring spoon, so the spoon itself doesn't actually go into the salt. When I need to measure salt and pepper, I still typically use spoon measures for both (and I've been a daily cook for 23 years). Since the measuring spoon does need to go into the pepper container, I try to make sure there's as little cross contamination as possible - but that means tapping salt off the spoon, not like, re-washing it. It's not a huge concern.

First I will try Surviving Christmas (2004), starring Ben Affleck and many other people, including, according to one delightful frame of the title sequence:

Jennifer Morrison

Udo Kier

Fuckin HELL. I'm to book book 7 in the Cradle series (Unsouled), and it's STILL able to drop lines that get me super excited. I'm all but inhaling the series.

Uh, super highly recommended, still haven't ever seen anything like it. Wuxia scifi?

Literally the only other possible example I can point at is Three Body Problem (sort of? but really it's more Chinese cultural scifi?), tho this is less dense and more popcorn fiction (but that's ok! I like fun!).

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@glassbottommeg I haven't yet read this series, but now I'm interested - thanks! Have you ever seen the 3-season AMC show "Into the Badlands"? It's... sci-fi wuxia, basically, though the "sci" part is a bit of a stretch (basically just the lush post-apocalyptic setting). It's visually breathtaking and well worth a watch, if you're the TV-watching type.

@RickiTarr a high school friend's older sister wrote a faux sob story to the Chick Comics publishing address, and got a full run of tracts and comics from them for just the cost of postage (or so I was told, at any rate). My nascent taste for camp and unintentional humor got kicked up to a full-blown hobby when I borrowed them my sophomore year 🎩🧐

doctorLURK,

@otheorange_tag nobody seems to really like it except for me (someone always shows up to complain about it when I post), but as an Android user, I switched to the NewPipe YouTube player app a little while back, and it has suited my purposes (just music) nicely: it has no ads, it remembers my settings without a login, and it plays music even when my screen is locked. I have no idea how it works for more interactive users, but since I'm usually just on YT for audio, I've been quite happy with it.

doctorLURK,

@otheorange_tag anyway my point is if YouTube wants ad revenue, that's an easy way to deprive them of yours

    Here's something I've been thinking about lately:

    Does society need psychopathic behavior? Does it exist for a Social or Natural Evolutionary purpose?

    I have edited the questions somewhat to emphasize behavior and not a person themselves.

    doctorLURK,
    @doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

    @RickiTarr my two cents: mutations which increase the likelihood of one having children are more likely to be passed on (by having children). I can see how psychopathy might be an advantage there - manipulative people with little to no regard for others can often get what they want (in this case, sex) in the short term, which for baby-makin' is the only term that matters. OTOH, humans are so socially complex that "emotionally dishonest sex" must only be one small piece of our evolutionary story.

    doctorLURK,
    @doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

    @RickiTarr I have all sorts of ideas, but no expertise 😔 but yeah, as a former angsty '90s teen I've definitely had my share of "what does she even see in him?" thoughts (and all sorts of potential answers, lol). But who really understands us humans, anyway?

    What is a word that you had read, but after hearing it spoken aloud, you realized you were pronouncing completely wrong in your head?

    Mine is pretty Embarrassing, and is just one of many!

    MISLED! I'm not even sure how to type this out for it to make sense, but it was something like:

    Myz-ulled

    doctorLURK,
    @doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

    @RickiTarr jumping in to say that I've known how 'misled' is pronounced for most of my life, but my brain STILL does the exact same thing every time I read it! I have to stop and mentally shake my head and think, "no, it's 'mis-led' as in 'Miss Smith,' not as in the end of 'bamboozled.'" It's not just you!

    Anyone who primarily uses #YouTube for just listening to music (like I do) should consider trying out an app like @newpipe (NewPipe). I haven't dealt with an ad or interstitial break since I switched, and the mobile app plays sound while my phone is locked without missing a beat. I don't know if it'll be around forever, but I do know I'm never going back to just "www dot youtube dot com" for online videos again.

    Edit: Android DL link for those who want to try NewPipe: https://newpipe.net/#download

    doctorLURK,
    @doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

    @lurch Sure! I went here with my mobile browser and directly downloaded it: https://newpipe.net/#download

    I've had my phone open to non-Play Store APKs for a long time, so I don't know if your mileage will vary, but it was pretty painless for me.

    doctorLURK,
    @doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

    @lurch Yes, it's a YouTube front-end. It suits my purposes because I can listen to my old playlists of game music, etc. (stuff not typically available on streaming music platforms) without having to plow through a thousand ads every hour, but it's not a competing service to YouTube, per se.

    If you want to completely get away from YouTube, I don't have any personal experience yet, but I've heard nice things about the federated video tool, @peertube ! (NewPipe will also integrate with PeerTube.)

    A flight attendant told gospel singer Bobbi Storm she’d be removed if she wouldn’t stop singing/be quiet

    I’m gonna be a hater here and say tbh, good. She should not be allowed to sing. Flights/public transport should be quiet. Singing also expels more airborne disease into notoriously poorly ventilated planes.

    This woman is undeniably brilliant & talented, but the plane is not a place for a concert!
